Day 6

Scripture to Read: John 2:9–10

Many Christians have tried to say that what Jesus made was not really wine but grape juice. The problem with that line of thought is that we have to change God’s Word. The reason Christians today feel like it could not be wine is due to the way wine is made today. But, when we study the culture of Christ’s day, it is not the same as today. Spurgeon even writes, “As to the wine such as is commonly used in the East, a person must drink inordinately before he would become intoxicated with it. It would be possible, for there were cases in which men were intoxicated with wine; but, as a rule, intoxication was a rare vice in the Savior’s times and in the preceding ages.” So, when Christ made the wine, it would have been the finest they had ever tasted. The headwaiter even says, in John 2:10, “Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have drunk freely, then he serves the poorer wine; but you have kept the good wine until now.” The words of the headwaiter could be, “you have kept the best til last.” As followers of Christ, we know the best is yet to come. We know that this world is not our home (Colossians 3:1–4, 1 Thessalonians 4:15–17) and that one day we will be with our Lord face to face, fellowshipping with Him, praising Him and serving according to His perfect will for us in His kingdom. No doubt, we must live expectantly, knowing all our Lord has in store for us.

Challenge & Application

• Knowing everything God does is the best, how does that impact how you live today? • Who will you share Christ with this week so they have an opportunity to respond to Him?

Day 1

Jesus’ ministry was about to begin, as recorded in the Book of John. We read in John 2:1–2, “On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there; 2 and both Jesus and His disciples were invited to the wedding.” Jesus, His disciples, and Mary (the mother of Jesus) were all part of this wedding celebration...

Day 2

In Jesus’ day, probably even more so than today, the wedding celebration was an incredibly important part of the wedding. We read in John 2:3–4, “When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus *said to Him, ‘They have no wine.’ 4 And Jesus *said to her, ‘Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.’” In David Guzik’s commen...

Day 3

When Jesus addressed Mary in John 2:4, He said, “Woman, what does that have to do with us? My hour has not yet come.” Most people today would say this sounds disrespectful, but we must understand the culture of Jesus’ day. Most commentators agree on this point—that what Jesus said to Mary was a term of respect. We don’t have any word in the E...

Day 4

We read in John 2:5–8, “His mother *said to the servants, ‘Whatever He says to you, do it.’ 6 Now there were six stone waterpots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, containing twenty or thirty gallons each. 7 Jesus *said to them, ‘Fill the waterpots with water.’ So they filled them up to the brim. 8 And He *said to them, ‘Draw so...

Day 5

As we continue our walk through the Book of John, we read in John 2:9–10, “When the headwaiter tasted the water which had become wine, and did not know where it came from (but the servants who had drawn the water knew), the headwaiter *called the bridegroom, 10 and *said to him, ‘Every man serves the good wine first, and when the people have ...

Day 7

In John 2:11–12, we read this: “This beginning of His signs Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and manifested His glory, and His disciples believed in Him. 12 After this He went down to Capernaum, He and His mother and His brothers and His disciples; and they stayed there a few days.” According to God’s Word, Jesus had just performed His first mir...
