Day 1

Scripture to Read: Romans 8:5

This week, we get to closely examine the battlefield all Christians live in every day of our lives. The battle we face each day is between our flesh and the Holy Spirit living in us. When we surrendered to Christ as Lord, our “old man” was crucified with Christ, as we learned in Romans 6. But prior to us surrendering to Christ, our “old man” was in charge of us. The devil had full reign of our lives by way of our “old man” (2 Corinthians 4:3–4, 2 Timothy 2:26), and we were being held in captivity and did not know it. Now that we belong to Christ, we have life and are brand new because His Holy Spirit lives in us (2 Corinthians 5:17, Colossians 3:4). The problem is that we still live in an earthly shell which God calls the “flesh.” Our flesh will not die until we die physically; our flesh always has and always will hunger for the stuff of this world. God tells us in 1 John 2:16 that the world tempts our flesh through “the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life.” The enemy does not have anything else to offer our flesh, but the sad news is that our flesh hungers for these three things all the time. As we read Romans 8:5, God makes it clear that the battle between our flesh and His Holy Spirit in us starts in our minds. We’ll unpack more as we walk through this week.

Day 2

Over the next three days, we will take some time to examine Romans 8:5–8. God tells us in Romans 8:5, For those who are according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who are according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. To be “according to the flesh” can mean two things. One, every person living on earth st...

Day 3

Today, we continue to unpack Romans 8, as God tells us in Romans 8:6, For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace. As we ended yesterday, we examined some Scriptures where God tells us that we have to be continually renewed in our minds. What we choose to think about and what we choose to allow our...

Day 4

Sometimes, God lovingly confronts us in a way that may seem harsh at first but then brings us comfort, knowing He is not giving up on us in our journey with Him. Today is one of those moments, as God tells us in Romans 8:7–8, because the mind set on the flesh is hostile toward God; for it does not subject itself to the law of God, for it is n...

Day 5

Today, God gives us clarity on the issue of being in the flesh or in the Spirit, as we have been walking through Romans 8:5–13. God tells us in Romans 8:9, However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. So, now we know...

Day 6

God’s Word is so rich, and He loves when our eyes are opened to the fullness of all we have in Him. So today, we read in Romans 8:10–11, If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ J...

Day 7

We finish this week by reading Romans 8:12–13, So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh— 13 for if you are living according to the flesh, you must di...
