Scripture to Read: Colossians 2:16
God never wants us to forget what He has done for us through our Lord Jesus Christ. We know what God has already told us in Colossians 2:13–15 and all that He did for us through our Lord Jesus Christ. As a reminder, God made us alive together with Christ and forgave us of all our sins. God also rendered the spiritual forces of wickedness defenseless through Christ’s death and resurrection. However, in Colossae, some false teaching was being promoted to the new Christians there. There was an attempt to corrupt Christianity and revive legalistic Judaism, possibly also incorporating Gnosticism, a religious belief that salvation could be achieved through a special form of secret knowledge. So, as God led Paul to write, we read in Colossians 2:16, “Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day.” God wanted them to understand, but He also wants us to understand today that because our Lord Jesus won an incredible victory on the cross for everyone who surrenders to Him as Lord, no Christian should ever let anyone judge them in what we eat or drink or in any other matters related to a legalistic mindset. No doubt, we should never eat or drink something that causes another person to stumble or that dishonors our Lord. But, a life that is completely focused on our fellowship with our Lord Jesus Christ and His Word and all that He did for us on the cross has no room for legalism.
Challenge & Application
As Christians, why is it so important to know what Christ has done for us?
Why is there no room for legalism in a Christian’s life?
