Day 4

Scripture to Read: Colossians 2:19

When anyone gets caught up in chasing the stuff of this world, they either do not know Christ as their Lord and Savior yet or if it’s a follower of Christ, that means they have willingly turned their back on their fellowship with God to seek something this world is offering them. Our Lord is so gracious and loving toward us as His children and He does not want us to be lured away by anything this world offers us. He desires that we desire Him and His Word as much as He desires to fellowship with us. Those who get prideful and arrogant in their mindset, God tells us after Colossians 2:18, in Colossians 2:19, “and not holding fast to the head, from whom the entire body, being supplied and held together by the joints and ligaments, grows with a growth which is from God.” These prideful people lose their grip on Christ and begin to grasp for the things in this world. God warns us about pride in Proverbs 16:18, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before stumbling.” Pride also often precedes destructive choices, leading to stumbling and falling. Christ is the Head of His church, and as Christians, we must cling to Him and His Word. Christ fully supplies us with everything we need (2 Peter 1:3–4) through His Holy Spirit in us so we grow in our intimacy with Him and our knowledge of Him and we mature in Him as His children. God wants us to be healthy spiritually because He has much to accomplish through us.

Challenge & Application

What must we do each day to guard ourselves from chasing after the stuff this world offers us? How do we “hold fast” to Christ since He is the Head of the body and we are a part of His body?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God never wants us to forget what He has done for us through our Lord Jesus Christ. We know what God has already told us in Colossians 2:13–15 and all that He did for us through our Lord Jesus Christ. As a reminder, God made us alive together with Christ and forgave us of all our sins. God also rendered the spiritual forces of wickedness defe...

Day 2

Since there is no space for legalism in any Christian’s life, God led Paul to continue by writing this in Colossians 2:17, “things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ.” In the Old Testament, God had laid out certain foods that were to be eaten and certain foods that were not to be eaten by the Jewis...

Day 3

The reality of the false teachings that the Christians in Colossae were dealing with is revealed as we read this in Colossians 2:18, “Let no one keep defrauding you of your prize by delighting in self-abasement and the worship of the angels, taking his stand on visions he has seen, inflated without cause by his fleshly mind.” Some in Colossae...

Day 5

As followers of Christ, we must be continually reminded of what happened in our lives when we surrendered to Christ as our Lord and Savior. God had Paul write this in Colossians 2:20a, “If you have died with Christ to the elementary principles of the world…” This may sound like a question, but it’s a question with an obvious answer. A better ...

Day 6

In light of what God taught us in the devotion from yesterday, we now read what God had Paul write in Colossians 2:20b–23, “why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to decrees, such as, 21 “Do not handle, do not taste, do not touch!” 22 (which all refer to things destined to perish with use)—in accordance with the comma...

Day 7

In yesterday’s devotion, God taught us that He did not design us to live by a bunch of man-made rules and regulations. Because these rules and regulations are man-made over time, they simply deteriorate because they have no firm foundation. The other problem with these man-made rules and regulations we find in Colossians 2:23, “These are matt...
