Day 5

Scripture to Read: Genesis 19:15-30

Today we read through Genesis 19:15-30. First ,we read in Genesis 19:15-22 how the angels had to take Lot, his wife, and his daughters by the hand to get them out of Sodom. The angels told them to escape and not to look back. The angels wanted Lot and his family to flee to the hills, but Lot asked if they could go to Zoar since Lot felt like the hills were too far. The angels told Lot he and his family could go to Zoar, and so they left. As we continue to read in Genesis 19:23-29, we read how Lot’s wife looked back and was turned into a pillar of salt. The fact that she looked back was an outright act of disobedience to what the Lord’s angels had told them not to do. Lot’s wife may have revealed her true heart by looking back, showing she loved the wickedness of Sodom. We have turned to follow Christ and walk in obedience to Him. God never wants us to turn back to the things of this world because it will always lead to death (Romans 6:23, James 1:14-15). Then God’s Word shifts to Abraham seeing the smoke rise from the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah, and that God answered Abraham’s prayer and delivered Lot and his family out of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. In Genesis 19:30, we read that Lot left Zoar and moved to the hills because he was afraid to live in Zoar. We don’t know why he was fearful; we just know he was.

Challenge & Application

What did God teach you about obeying Him and His Word, and not turning back to the things of this world? How are you guarding your heart from turning back to the things of this world, that you know your flesh hungers for?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

As we begin our walk through Genesis 18, 19, and 20 this week, what we find is Gods interactions with Abraham. God also reveals to us, again, the promises He made to Abraham. One other thing we’ll see this week is the consequences that end up coming to people when they choose to disobey God and His Word. As we read Genesis 18:1-8, we see our ...

Day 2

In Genesis 18:9-15, our Lord makes sure Abraham and Sarah know that He will produce a miracle through them. The miracle God will perform through Abraham and Sarah is the child He will give them in their old age. The promise God gave them is the same promise He repeated to Abraham in Genesis 17:17-22. God repeats His promises a lot throughout ...

Day 3

In Genesis 18:16-22, our Lord chooses to reveal to Abraham that He will obliterate Sodom and Gomorrah. What we find next, in Genesis 18:23-33, is Abraham’s prayer before our Lord on behalf of all the people in Sodom and Gomorrah. We know that Lot, Abraham’s nephew, and all of Lot’s family live in Sodom, and that may be why Abraham is praying ...

Day 4

Today we begin to unfold Genesis 19 and our Lord’s judgment on Sodom and Gomorrah. Since our Lord is gracious and abounding in lovingkindness, He makes sure the two angels He sent to destroy Sodom and Gomorrah connected with Lot and his family to deliver them (Genesis 19:1-3). Then in Genesis 19:4-11, God reveals to us the wickedness of the h...

Day 6

In Genesis 19:31-38, we need to make sure we do not miss a few things going on. First, we see that out of fear and disobedience, Lots daughters question if they would ever marry and have children. Why Lot’s daughters think they could each never find a husband and have children with them is a mystery. We know that both of their fiancés were ki...

Day 7

In Genesis 20, we read how Abraham and Sarah continued to move. Even though Abraham is known as a man of great faith (Hebrews 11:8-19), here in Genesis 20, Abraham showed his disbelief that the Lord could protect Him from the pagan kings in the land. Because Abraham doubted God’s protection, he told Sarah that they should call each other brot...
