Day 4

Scripture to Read: Genesis 21:8-34

As we continually walk with our Lord each day, we see how God’s faithfulness shows us, again and again, that trusting Him and His Truth brings great joy. In Genesis 21, we see how God’s faithfulness continued as He provided protection for Hagar and Ishmael, who Abraham had sent away at the request of Sarah. Also, the Lord made a great nation out of Ishmael because he was Abraham’s son. Again, God always fulfills His promises. God had promised Abraham to make Ishmael a nation because Ishmael was Abraham’s seed (Genesis 21:13). As we read Genesis 21:15-21, we see that Hagar and Ishmael left the following morning after Abraham had asked them to go, and Abraham provided them with food and water. But the water ran out quickly and that brought Hagar to a moment in despair. But God showed up and spoke to Hagar. God promised Hagar that Ishmael would become a great nation. God also provided water for Hagar and Ishmael, meeting their every need. Then we read, as Ishmael grew up, that Hagar found a wife for Ishmael in Egypt. To know more, we find in 1 Chronicles 1:29-31 the records of the genealogy of Abraham through Ishmael. This is important because God fulfills His promises, and we can trust Him to continue to do the same today. In Genesis 21:22-34, God shows us the relationship between Abimelech and Abraham. The great takeaway is that the Lord gave Abraham His blessing and favor, even in the eyes of others.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about His provision, even when it seems like a hopeless situation? 2. How are you trusting God, even with the smallest details of your life, and how are you seeing Him work in each one?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

God has been speaking to us, as He always does, through His miraculous Word. We’ve been walking through Genesis and this week, we get to see what God has for us in Genesis 21 & 22. Up to this point in Genesis, God has affirmed His covenant and promise to Abraham several times. God has spoken His promise to Abraham in Genesis 12:1-3; Genesis 1...

Day 2

As we ended yesterday’s devotion, we were reminded that Abraham still did not have it all together. He still struggled in his faith. Two times Abraham lied about Sarah being his sister (instead of his wife) because he feared that he might die because of her beauty (Genesis 12:10-20; Genesis 20:1-18). We also saw that Abraham tried to fulfill...

Day 3

After Isaac was born, Abraham had to continue to obey the commands of God. As God had made the command about circumcision, in Genesis 17:10-12, Abraham made sure to circumcise Isaac on the eighth day. What’s interesting is the eighth day has great significance in the safety of the child. God knows how He created us and every minute detail in ...

Day 5

Genesis 22 is a familiar passage to many believers because it is the incredible story of how God tested Abraham. As we read Genesis 22, we must remember that the only way we grow in our faith is that our faith must be tested. God’s Word says in James 1:2-3, Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, 3 knowing that th...

Day 6

We come to the point in Genesis 22 where we see both Abraham and Isaac’s faith on full display. The point must be made here that no one had ever been raised from the dead at this point in Scripture, in Genesis 22. Nevertheless, according to Hebrews 11, Abraham had grown so much in his faith in the 35 plus years since age 75 that Abraham beli...

Day 7

The awesome truth of Genesis 22 is knowing that this story gives us a beautiful picture of our Lord Jesus Christ being the sacrifice God has provided for each one of us. God demands a blood sacrifice for our sins to be cleansed from our sins. Christ is the only One who could be that perfect sacrifice for ALL mankind. Jesus was provided on our...
