Scripture to Read: Judges 6:19–24
Gideon prepared an offering for the Lord and brought it to Him. Then, we read in Judges 6:21, “Then the angel of the Lord put out the end of the staff that was in his hand and touched the meat and the unleavened bread; and fire sprang up from the rock and consumed the meat and the unleavened bread. Then the angel of the Lord vanished from his sight.” The Lord displayed a small amount of His power to Gideon and consumed the offering Gideon had brought to Him with His holy fire. Gideon’s response is recorded in Judges 6:22, “Alas, O Lord God! For now I have seen the angel of the Lord face to face.” Gideon knew he had been in the presence of the Lord. Then, our Lord reassured Gideon in Judges 6:23 when He said to him, “Peace to you, do not fear; you shall not die.” Gideon needed that reassurance that he would not be killed, for he knew he was a sinful man, and to be in the presence of His Holy Creator and live would not be possible without God pouring out on him his mercy and grace. Gideon worshipped the Lord and built an altar to Him. Gideon was no longer terrified of God, for he named the altar “The Lord is Peace.” Gideon, at this point, was experiencing the peace of God. God wants us to experience His peace daily; that’s why He tells us in Philippians 4:6–7 not to be anxious, but to pray to Him and His peace will guard us in Christ.
