Scripture to Read: Mathew 27:1–10
Jesus was betrayed, and now all the chief priests and elders are in agreement; they want Jesus put to death. They could not do this on their own, so they sent Jesus to Pilate, the governor, hoping Pilate would render a decision to put Jesus to death. We also find Judas feeling remorse for his awful decision. Note that God’s Word does not say that Judas repented. God’s Word says that Judas felt remorse, and so Judas returned the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. The chief priests and elders did not want anything to do with Judas or the thirty silver pieces. What seemed right the night before now was all wrong. Sin always runs its full cycle. As God’s Word says in James 1:14–16 “14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.” Judas’ sin brought death to his life because Judas realized that the thirty pieces of silver, which seemed like something that could meet a need in his life, were now nothing to him. Judas threw the thirty pieces of silver into the temple and left. Know this: the emptiness brought on by sin affects us as believers too. When we give in to the desires of our flesh and choose not to submit to the Holy Spirit in us, sin is accomplished, and sin always results in death.
