Day 3

Scripture to Read: Revelation 2:9

We are going to focus again on Revelation 2:9 today. As we saw yesterday, all Christians need to expect that persecution and suffering are going to come. Though we don’t experience persecution and suffering much here in Kentucky or the USA, we have fellow believers worldwide who do face persecution and suffering simply because they are pursuing Christ and His Word. As our Lord speaks to the believers in Smyrna and us in Revelation 2:9, He adds something of great value. Our Lord says, “I know your tribulation and your poverty (but you are rich)…” Now we know that the believers in Smyrna were poor, yet Jesus calls them, and us, “rich.” Our Lord Jesus Christ will never focus on the riches of this world to describe someone as being rich. Our Lord knows, and we should too, that no matter how much material wealth a person accumulates from a worldly standard, they are destitute without Christ. Jesus says, in Matthew16:26, For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? Gaining everything this world has to offer and missing Christ as our Lord and Savior is the worst tragedy of all. Our spiritual wealth as believers is only found in our living, loving Savior and Lord. Christ’s riches far exceed anyone’s physical poverty; that is why Christ calls the believers in Smyrna, “rich,” and that is why we are rich today. May we never forget what true riches are and that they are only found in Christ.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about the difference between the riches of this world and the riches that are in Christ? 2. How is your life different, and how are your life’s ambitions different knowing that only Christ can satisfy us?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

This week we focus on the second of the seven churches that our Lord Jesus Christ spoke to through the Apostle John. This week we examine what our Lord Jesus Christ says to the church at Smyrna and, of course, to us as believers today. Our Lord introduces Himself as follows in Revelation 2:8 “The first and the last, who was dead, and has come...

Day 2

To better understand what our Lord Jesus Christ says to the believers in Smyrna in Revelation 2:9, we must know a few things about the city of Smyrna. Smyrna was a wealthy city located on the Aegean sea. It had a protected harbor and sat at the foot of Mount Pagus. Smyrna was often called a “flower” or “crown” in East Asia because of its beau...

Day 4

Knowing our true riches are only found in Christ is critical to living for Christ each day. We know all believers will suffer persecution at the hands of perverse and evil people, even if it has not happened yet. For our brothers and sisters in Christ who are facing persecution, we need to pray and ask God to deliver them. That is why God led...

Day 5

As we have been walking through the devotions this week, we have seen that persecution and suffering are guaranteed for all believers. God has also revealed that our spiritual battles are not with people but against Satan and all of the spiritual forces of wickedness and darkness. Today we see how Christ called the believers in Smyrna, and is...

Day 6

As we examine our lives, we need to ask ourselves each day if we are living faithfully for our Lord. As we saw yesterday, every believer will receive “the crown of life” as an inheritance from our Lord. We know as Christians that suffering and persecution are promised in this life. We must choose to respond in a way that honors our Lord and n...

Day 7

As we have learned this week, a life that is faithful to Christ to death is a life that will live eternally with Him. On the contrary, a life that is lived apart from Christ is a life that will experience eternal death. As we close out this week, we read in Revelation 2:11 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. ...
