Scripture to Read: Judges 15:1–8
Samson had lost his wife to his best man, and when he found out (Judges 15:1–3), his anger was that much worse. There is no doubt that God raised Samson up to be His judge over Israel and to bring His judgment upon the Philistines, but Samson struggled with his anger. God still uses us, even with the weaknesses in our lives. We must remember that God’s Word tells us in Romans 8:28, “And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” God used Samson to advance His plan for Israel and God uses us to carry out His perfect plan even when we don’t do it perfectly. According to Judges 15:4–5, “Samson went and caught three hundred foxes, and took torches, and turned the foxes tail to tail and put one torch in the middle between two tails. 5 When he had set fire to the torches, he released the foxes into the standing grain of the Philistines, thus burning up both the shocks and the standing grain, along with the vineyards and groves.” When the Philistines found out that Samson had done this because his father-in-law gave his wife to his best man, the Philistines killed the father-in-law and his daughter. Samson took his revenge and destroyed many Philistines with a great slaughter (Judges 15:8). Because of Samson’s anger, he suffered personal loss. If Samson had been obedient to God, He still would have carried out His plan and blessed Samson.
