Day 2

Scripture to Read: Genesis 29:1-8

As Jacob journeyed to Haran, we find in Genesis 29:1-8 that Jacob came to a well where there were shepherds, along with their sheep, and the shepherds were waiting to water their flocks. Jacob asks the shepherds where they are from because Jacob probably was not sure exactly where he was. Jacob knew he was on his way to Haran, but there were no road signs, GPS, or maps to let Jacob know if he had reached his destination or not. Though it does not say this here in Genesis 29, we have to know that God led Jacob to the well and those shepherds. God is a God of detail, and He is always working, even when we may not recognize His handiwork. The shepherds told Jacob they were from Haran, which led Jacob to his second question in Genesis 29:5 “Do you know Laban the son of Nahor?” Jacob wasted no time getting right to the point. Jacob knew he was looking for Laban, his uncle (his mother Rebekah’s brother) and if these shepherds knew of Laban, they could help Jacob find his way. When we seek direction in our lives we must first ask God for His guidance to lead us where He knows we need to go. Then we can also ask others, who God brings into our lives for specific direction, trusting that God will use them to confirm the direction we are headed. God will use people in our lives to guide us where He wants us to be.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about seeking direction and guidance from Him? 2. How are you currently seeking God for direction each day to make sure you are walking according to His plan for you?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

This week we see how Jacob is being challenged in ways he probably never expected. As a little reminder from Genesis 28 of what has happened in Jacob’s life: Issac had listened to Rebekah about sending Jacob to her brother Laban’s so Jacob could find a wife there and not from the Canaanites; of course, Rebekah knew that Esau wanted to kill Ja...

Day 3

God works in our lives even in the smallest of details so that we can rest and trust Him no matter what we may face in this life. God never promised us that this life would be easy, but He did promise us that we would face tests and trials to grow our faith in Him (James 1:2-4). As Jacob talked with the shepherds about Laban and Laban’s famil...

Day 4

Yesterday we read about Jacob’s encounter with Rachel. Then Rachel had run to tell her father Laban about Jacob. Today we pick up with Laban’s response to Rachel’s news. We read in Genesis 29:13-14, As soon as Laban heard the news about Jacob, his sister's son, he ran to meet him and embraced him and kissed him and brought him to his house. J...

Day 5

We know Laban got a month's worth of labor out of Jacob and never talked about a wage, which reveals a little about Laban's heart. Laban showed us that he was a user of people and would try to get the most for himself. Jacob declared his love for Rachel to Laban and would work seven years for Laban to have Rachel as his wife. Even though Jaco...

Day 6

God begins to unveil to us His abundant favor being poured out on Leah. Though Leah was not Jacob’s first choice, as a wife, Leah was God’s choice. In Genesis 29:31-35, we read how God took care of Leah and blessed her to give Jacob his first four sons. It’s interesting to note that Leah’s lineage leads to our Messiah. Jesus was born of the t...

Day 7

We know that God had blessed Leah by giving Jacob his first four sons through Leah. Rachel, on the other hand, was not bearing children at all. Because of Rachels’s jealously of Leah, we read in Genesis 30:1-8 how Rachel gave her maidservant Bilhah to Jacob to have children through Bilhah. Then we read in Genesis 30:9-13 that because Leah was...
