Scripture to Read: Genesis 25
In Genesis 25, as God led Moses to write His Word, He had Moses shift from focusing on Abraham to unpacking Isaac’s life and introducing Jacob and Esau. In Genesis 25:21, we read, “And Isaac prayed to the Lord for his wife, because she was barren. And the Lord granted his prayer, and Rebekah his wife conceived.” In Genesis 25:22, we see how Jacob and Esau began to struggle against one another in the womb. Rebekah felt the struggle and she asked God why this was happening. God answered her in Genesis 25:23, “Two nations are in your womb, and two peoples from within you shall be divided; the one shall be stronger than the other, the older shall serve the younger.” God’s answer to Rebekah revealed a portion of His sovereign plan. Rebekah probably never fully comprehended what God shared with her, but God pointed it out through Paul in Romans 9:10–12, “Rebekah also, when she had conceived twins by one man, our father Isaac; 11 for though the twins were not yet born and had not done anything good or bad, so that God’s purpose according to His choice would stand, not because of works but because of Him who calls, 12 it was said to her, ‘The older will serve the younger.’” Jacob wasn’t chosen because of any works he had done or would do. God had His plan for Jacob and Esau and His plan would be fulfilled. God has a perfect plan for us (Ephesians 2:10), and as we walk in obedience to Him, we will fulfill it.
