Day 7

Scripture to Read: Genesis 32

In Genesis 32, we find that Jacob had exchanged one family issue for another. Jacob said goodbye to Laban and then prepared to reunite with his brother Esau. God, through His grace, sent angels to Jacob and Jacob was comforted through our Lord’s presence. God had Moses describe Jacob’s preparations for his meeting with Esau. First, Jacob sent messengers to Esau (Genesis 32:3–6). Then, Jacob sent a present for Esau (Genesis 32:13–16). Jacob hoped that Esau would accept the gifts and then show him kindness (Genesis 32:17–21). The most crucial point in this passage comes as Jacob’s fear and distress arise (Genesis 32:6) at the prospect of seeing Esau, knowing he had deceived Esau 20 years earlier. Jacob’s response to his fear was to cry out to God for help. Jacob’s prayer opened and closed with the knowledge of the covenant God had made with him (Genesis 32:9, 12). Jacob confessed his unworthiness as a sinner of God’s steadfast love. Jacob clung to God’s grace that he might be delivered if Esau chose to harm him (Genesis 32:10–11). Then, Jacob wrestled all night with the Lord and seemed to have the upper hand, but with one touch to his hip socket, God brought Jacob to a place of humility and Jacob turned to the Lord. Jacob couldn’t use his deception or bargaining power. In humility, Jacob cried out to the Lord to bless him (Genesis 32:26). God responded by renaming him Israel. Jacob was no longer marked by deception and cheating but by the victorious power of God.

Day 6

Genesis 30:25–43 highlights both God’s blessing and Laban’s heart. In Genesis 30:42–43, we see our Lord bless Jacob with a stronger flock than Laban’s. Remember God’s promise to Abraham in Genesis 12:3: God will bless those who bless Abraham and his offspring and curse those who curse them. When Jacob, in Genesis 30:25–26, asks Laban to allow...
