Day 2

Scripture to Read: Luke 10:26–27

After the lawyer asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life, Jesus then responded with a question, which He often did when people thought to challenge Him. God had Luke record this in Luke 10:26, “And He said to him, ‘What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?’” Jesus knew the lawyer would be very familiar with God’s Law, which of course had been given to Moses. So, Jesus asked the lawyer what God’s Word said. God had Luke record the lawyer’s response in Luke 10:27, “And he answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.’” The lawyer knew what God had given to Moses since it was recorded in Deuteronomy 6:5 and in Leviticus 19:18. The lawyer knew it was all about loving God and loving others. What the lawyer struggled with was how to actually love God and love his neighbor as himself. Most people today struggle with the same issue because they love themselves more than anyone else. For younger people, this is shown again and again in what they post on social media. Most of their posts are about themselves because they love themselves that much. For older people, it’s examining how we listen to people. Do we really listen or are we more interested in what we have to share than in what they are sharing with us? Love is an act of our will.

Challenge & Application

When it comes to loving God and others with all your heart, soul, and mind, how are you doing and why? How can you improve on loving God and others the way God has commended us to do?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

We had examined last week the ministry Jesus had sent out the seventy disciples of His to fulfill. They had returned excited about all they had seen God do in and through them. Then, God led Luke to write this in Luke 10:25, “And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, ‘Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’” When Jesus...

Day 3

Jesus knows that apart from Him we can do nothing, for we are dead (Ephesians 2:1–3) in our sins. But when we surrender to Christ, we can do all that God has commanded us to do because He gives us His Holy Spirit, giving us all we need to obey Him. God has commanded us to love Him with all we are and to love our neighbor as ourselves. God had...

Day 4

Jesus gave the answer to eternal life: Obey God and His Word. But we know there is no way to do that in and of ourselves. No one is capable of walking in obedience to our Lord and His Word by our own strength. That is why Jesus came: only He was able to fulfill all of God’s Law, never once failing, being perfect in every way. Because of Chris...

Day 5

Jesus knew the lawyer was seeking to justify himself, so Jesus laid out a beautiful scenario to challenge him. God had Luke record in Luke 10:30–32, “Jesus replied and said, ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. 31 And by chance a pries...

Day 6

Jesus used the most unlikely hero in His story. God had Luke record in Luke 10:33–35, “But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, 34 and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 O...

Day 7

Jesus’ story of the Samaritan hit the hearts of everyone in the crowd that day. But since Jesus was talking to the lawyer, God had Luke record this as Jesus talked directly to the lawyer in Luke 10:36–37, “‘Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?’ 37 And he said, ‘The one who show...
