Day 5

Scripture to Read: Luke 10:30–32

Jesus knew the lawyer was seeking to justify himself, so Jesus laid out a beautiful scenario to challenge him. God had Luke record in Luke 10:30–32, “Jesus replied and said, ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. 31 And by chance a priest was going down on that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite also, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.’” Jesus, as well as all those who were listening, already knew that the road from Jerusalem to Jericho was dangerous, for many crimes and robberies took place along it. Notice that both the priest and the Levite saw their Jewish brother lying half dead but chose not to do anything for him. Instead, they both simply moved themselves to the other side of the road so as not to notice him. The problem was this: since both the priest and the Levite were religious officials, they would have had a moral obligation to stop and show mercy to a fellow Jew, but they didn’t stop at all. The priests’ and Levites’ uncaring, insensitive attitude would have broken God’s Law and everyone there would have known it, especially the lawyer. Since the lawyer wanted to justify himself, Jesus gave a scenario in which the priest and Levite might have justified themselves given how dangerous that road was, but self-justification is nothing but an excuse.

Challenge & Application

Why is self-justification never honoring to our Lord? How do we guard against self-justification so that our choices align with God and His Word?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

We had examined last week the ministry Jesus had sent out the seventy disciples of His to fulfill. They had returned excited about all they had seen God do in and through them. Then, God led Luke to write this in Luke 10:25, “And a lawyer stood up and put Him to the test, saying, ‘Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’” When Jesus...

Day 2

After the lawyer asked Jesus what he must do to inherit eternal life, Jesus then responded with a question, which He often did when people thought to challenge Him. God had Luke record this in Luke 10:26, “And He said to him, ‘What is written in the Law? How does it read to you?’” Jesus knew the lawyer would be very familiar with God’s Law, w...

Day 3

Jesus knows that apart from Him we can do nothing, for we are dead (Ephesians 2:1–3) in our sins. But when we surrender to Christ, we can do all that God has commanded us to do because He gives us His Holy Spirit, giving us all we need to obey Him. God has commanded us to love Him with all we are and to love our neighbor as ourselves. God had...

Day 4

Jesus gave the answer to eternal life: Obey God and His Word. But we know there is no way to do that in and of ourselves. No one is capable of walking in obedience to our Lord and His Word by our own strength. That is why Jesus came: only He was able to fulfill all of God’s Law, never once failing, being perfect in every way. Because of Chris...

Day 6

Jesus used the most unlikely hero in His story. God had Luke record in Luke 10:33–35, “But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion, 34 and came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him. 35 O...

Day 7

Jesus’ story of the Samaritan hit the hearts of everyone in the crowd that day. But since Jesus was talking to the lawyer, God had Luke record this as Jesus talked directly to the lawyer in Luke 10:36–37, “‘Which of these three do you think proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell into the robbers’ hands?’ 37 And he said, ‘The one who show...
