Day 4

Scripture to Read: Luke 13:14

Jesus had just healed the woman who had been doubled over for eighteen long years. This miracle, like all others, was absolutely mind-blowing. But there was one in the synagogue that day whose heart was so hard that he missed the incredible gift God had given this woman. God had Luke record this in Luke 13:14, “But the synagogue official, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, began saying to the crowd in response, ‘There are six days in which work should be done; so come during them and get healed, and not on the Sabbath day.’” Many might wonder at how a person’s heart could be that cold and calloused. God tells us in 2 Corinthians 4:4, “…the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.” Though the woman had been bound by the power of a demon, her bondage had simply been physical. Sadly, the synagogue official was totally unaware of his spiritual bondage, for he had been blinded by Satan so that he could not see Jesus as Messiah nor see the beauty of the woman being set free from her physical bondage. Spiritual bondage and blindness are horrible tools of the spiritual forces of darkness. People who are in bondage don’t know it and think that they are just fine the way they are. God wants us to be His light in their lives so that they might have the opportunity to be set free.

Day 1

Jesus was still teaching His disciples and the thousands of people who had gathered together to hear Him. God had Luke record this in Luke 13:1–5, “Now on the same occasion there were some present who reported to Him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mixed with their sacrifices. 2 And Jesus said to them, ‘Do you suppose that these Ga...

Day 2

Jesus often taught using parables. God had Luke record one in Luke 13:6–9, “And He began telling this parable: ‘A man had a fig tree which had been planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and did not find any. 7 And he said to the vineyard-keeper, ‘Behold, for three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree wit...

Day 3

Jesus taught daily, but He also made sure to be in a synagogue on the Sabbath to teach those who were there. God had Luke record the following in Luke 13:10–13, “And He was teaching in one of the synagogues on the Sabbath. 11 And there was a woman who for eighteen years had had a sickness caused by a spirit; and she was bent double, and could...

Day 5

Jesus knew that the synagogue official’s heart was so hardened that he had fallen into the trap of trusting in nothing more than empty religion. God had Luke record Jesus’ response in Luke 13:15–16, “But the Lord answered him and said, ‘You hypocrites, does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him ...

Day 6

As Jesus rebuked the synagogue official, He asked, “Does not each of you on the Sabbath untie his ox or his donkey from the stall and lead him away to water him?” Jesus’ question was not complex or deep, but it was definitely to the point. Jesus wanted to know why someone could help an animal on the Sabbath, but they couldn’t help a person wh...

Day 7

Jesus had more to teach, and God had Luke record this in Luke 13:18–21, “So He was saying, ‘What is the kingdom of God like, and to what shall I compare it? 19 It is like a mustard seed, which a man took and threw into his own garden; and it grew and became a tree, and the birds of the air nested in its branches.’ 20 And again He said, ‘To wh...
