Scripture to Read: Luke 7:1–10
Jesus had just finished teaching His disciples and the crowd that had gathered, and once He was done, He headed to Capernaum. As God led Luke to write, we find that God had Luke write about a centurion, and this centurion had one of his slaves who was about to die. The centurion sent some Jewish elders to Jesus to ask Him to come and save the life of his slave. Jesus, being led by the Holy Spirit, chose to follow these Jewish elders, but before Jesus reached the centurion’s house, we find this recorded in Luke 7:6–8, “the centurion sent friends, saying to Him, ‘Lord, do not trouble Yourself further, for I am not worthy for You to come under my roof; 7 for this reason I did not even consider myself worthy to come to You, but just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I also am a man placed under authority, with soldiers under me; and I say to this one, ‘Go!’ and he goes, and to another, ‘Come!’ and he comes, and to my slave, ‘Do this!’ and he does it.’” This centurion knew the power of Jesus, but he also felt unworthy for Jesus to come to his house. What the centurion said, though, revealed his faith in Jesus and Jesus’ power. Jesus even said in Luke 7:9, “I say to you, not even in Israel have I found such great faith.” Jesus “marveled” at the centurion’s faith and at the unbelief of His people in Mark 6:6. Jesus marveled at great faith and great unbelief.
