Scripture to Read: Luke 7:18–19
God had Luke shift gears, for God had Luke write about John the Baptist. God had Luke record in Luke 7:18–19, “The disciples of John reported to him about all these things. 19 Summoning two of his disciples, John sent them to the Lord, saying, ‘Are You the Expected One, or do we look for someone else?’” John the Baptist had been thrown into prison by Herod the tetrarch, as recorded in Matthew 14:1–12, Mark 6:14–29, and in Luke 3:15–20. John’s disciples saw all that Jesus had been doing and would go back to John to report it to him. Though John the Baptist had been sent by God to be the forerunner for Jesus, John probably had some doubts since he had been thrown into prison and wanted to make sure that Jesus was the Christ (Messiah). So, John sent two of his disciples to question Jesus as to whether He was the expected Messiah prophesied about in the Old Testament. There are times in most believers’ lives when doubt hits us head-on and we wonder whether everything in the Bible is true. We wonder if Jesus is the only way to a right relationship with God the Father. We even sometimes doubt our salvation and question if we’re really going to make it to heaven. Having doubts is natural, but God wants us to come to Him and to search His Word for the answers we need. John knew the only reliable source who could give him the answer to His question was Jesus Himself. The same is still true for us today.
