Scripture to Read: Luke 8:42
We know Jairus humbly approached Jesus, and today we see why, as God had Luke record this in Luke 8:42, “for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as He went, the crowds were pressing against Him.” Jairus’ daughter was deathly ill, and Jairus knew that Jesus was the only one who could heal her. No doubt, Jairus was desperate, but if desperation drives someone to Jesus, then desperation is a great thing. We know from the devotions on Luke 8:22–39 that our Lord uses trials to strengthen our faith in Him. Trials can definitely cause one to be desperate depending on the type of trial we’re walking through. We should not need to face desperation to humble ourselves before our Lord, but God loves us so much that He will use whatever means necessary to draw us to Himself. God desires that we choose Him by humbly coming before Him every day and humbly examining His Word to clearly hear His voice, as He declares to us all He desires for us to walk in. From what God had Luke record, we also know that Jesus was surrounded by the crowd as He walked, so, people were pressing in on Him from every side. The people wanted to get close to Jesus. God did not have Luke tell us why, but likely, most of the crowd was there to see another miracle. Because Christ has set us free from the power and penalty of sin, that should be more than enough motivation for us to passionately pursue Him.
