Day 4

Scripture to Read: Luke 8:43–44

Jesus was surrounded by the crowd as He walked to Jairus’ house, and as they pressed against Him, we read about another person in the crowd who was in desperate need. We read in Luke 8:43–44, “And a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone, 44 came up behind Him and touched the fringe of His cloak, and immediately her hemorrhage stopped.” Anyone who has ever been sick and in need of medical care can definitely identify with this woman and her desperation to be healed. This woman had been to many doctors over the years, and possibly others who she thought might be able to help her. For twelve years she suffered with this hemorrhage, and no one was able to heal her. It’s hard to imagine how she would have had to push through the crowd to get close to Jesus, but she was able, and as soon as she touched the “fringe of His cloak,” she was immediately healed. In ancient Israel, the fringes of garments were a commandment from God, as outlined in Numbers 15:38–39. The tassels/fringes were to be a constant reminder to the people of all the commandments of the Lord, to follow them and not to follow their own hearts. This woman’s faith in Jesus’ healing power is revealed, as she believed that a mere touch could cure her. Our Lord didn’t heal everyone who needed healing while He was here, and He doesn’t physically heal everyone today, but He DOES spiritually heal EVERYONE who places their faith in Him.

Challenge & Application

Why was the woman in such desperation to get to Jesus, and how does your desperation for Jesus compare? Physical healing is temporary, but spiritual healing is eternal; so, how are you helping others find spiritual healing through Christ?

Day 1

Jesus and the disciples had sailed to the country of the Gerasenes, which is opposite Galilee, and as we know, Jesus healed the demon-possessed man. But then, Jesus and the disciples returned to Galilee. God had Luke record the following in Luke 8:40, “And as Jesus returned, the people welcomed Him, for they had all been waiting for Him.” The...

Day 2

When Jesus and the disciples returned to Galilee, a crowd of people was waiting for Jesus. God had Luke tell us about one of those in the crowd, as we read in Luke 8:41, “And there came a man named Jairus, and he was an official of the synagogue; and he fell at Jesus’ feet, and began to implore Him to come to his house.” God tells us that Jai...

Day 3

We know Jairus humbly approached Jesus, and today we see why, as God had Luke record this in Luke 8:42, “for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as He went, the crowds were pressing against Him.” Jairus’ daughter was deathly ill, and Jairus knew that Jesus was the only one who could heal her. No doubt, Jair...

Day 5

The woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years was miraculously healed, so, God had Luke write Jesus’ response in Luke 8:45–48, “And Jesus said, ‘Who is the one who touched Me?’ And while they were all denying it, Peter said, ‘Master, the people are crowding and pressing in on You.’ 46 But Jesus said, ‘Someone did touch Me, for I was aware t...

Day 6

Jesus had just healed the woman, and then God tells us this in Luke 8:49, “While He was still speaking, someone *came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, ‘Your daughter has died; do not trouble the Teacher anymore.’” It’s hard for us to imagine what Jairus felt at that exact moment, for he had just seen a woman healed from a hem...

Day 7

God had Luke give us the picture of what finally happened once Jesus, His disciples, and Jairus arrived at Jairus’ house. We read in Luke 8:51–56, “When He came to the house, He did not allow anyone to enter with Him, except Peter and John and James, and the girl’s father and mother. 52 Now they were all weeping and lamenting for her; but He ...
