Day 1

Scripture to Read: Revelation 3:7

God has been teaching us a lot through His letters to the seven churches in Revelation, chapters 2 & 3. This week, we unpack what our Lord Jesus Christ wrote to the church in Philadelphia through John. As we start this week, we need to remember that our Lord Jesus spoke to all seven churches, instructing the churches (and all Christians) to remember our “first love,” which of course is our Lord Jesus Christ. Jesus also taught the churches about the importance of walking worthy of the calling we have been called with by our Lord (Matthew 28:18-20; Ephesians 4:1; Colossians 1:10-12; Colossians 2:6; 1 Thessalonians 2:12). It is interesting that of the seven churches, Jesus only counted two of those churches as faithful. The two churches Jesus consider “worthy” are the ones who would seem, from the world’s point of view, to be failures because of the suffering they were going through. Suffering is not always a sign of failure, for God tells us that in this world we should expect suffering if we are fully living for Him (John 15:18-25, James 1:2-4; 2 Timothy 3:12; 1 Peter 2:18-25; 1 Peter 3:14-18; 1 Peter 4:12-16). No one likes to think about suffering, but we should not be surprised by the suffering we face as we live for our Lord Jesus Christ. The other five churches the world would believe are successful; Jesus points out where they are failing. May we be considered worthy by our Lord and not the world.

Challenge & Application

1. What did God teach you today about suffering in this life and about your worthiness? 2. How are you pursuing Christ, His Word, and living for Him so you are prepared for whatever suffering you might face?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 2

In Revelation 3:7-13, Jesus addressed the church of Philadelphia. As we noted in yesterday’s devotion, the church in Philadelphia is one of the two faithful churches spoken well of by our Lord Jesus Christ. In Revelation 3:7, Jesus described His authority and that this letter is from Him; “And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write:...

Day 3

As we read Revelation 3:8, Jesus reminds the church in Philadelphia that He sees and knows all of their works. Of course, this Word from our Lord is for us as well for He sees and knows everything we do each day. In Revelation 3:8, our Lord says, “I know your deeds. Behold, I have put before you an open door which no one can shut, because you...

Day 4

As we continue to examine Revelation 3:8, we see that Jesus says He has put an open door before the church. Many times in Scripture this “open door” refers to opportunities to share the gospel of Christ (1 Corinthians 16:8-9; 2 Corinthians 2:12). In Colossians 4:3 God led Paul to ask the church at Colossae to pray this for him: that God will ...

Day 5

As we continue to unpack Revelation 3:7-13, we need to know that the Believers in Philadelphia had encountered hardships for living out their faith. Jesus spoke of the people in Philadelphia who persecuted the Christians during that period. Jesus said, “Behold, I will cause those of the synagogue of Satan, who say that they are Jews and are n...

Day 6

As we finish up with Revelation 3:9 today, we also find that Jesus said He will make others know that He has loved us. One day Jesus will reveal to the entire world that we belong to Him. God led John to write this in 1 John 3:2 Beloved, now we are children of God, and it has not appeared as yet what we will be. We know that when He appears, ...

Day 7

As we close out this week, we find Jesus proclaiming in Revelation 3:11, “I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have, so that no one will take your crown.” When Jesus says He is coming “quickly,” it does not mean He’s coming in the immediate future, but it means that His coming will be sudden and unexpected. Again, this is another reference...
