Scripture to Read: Luke 1:34-38
Mary asks a great question to Gabriel. She asks how she is going to have a child when she’s still a virgin. This is a legitimate question since there had never been, nor will there ever be again, a pregnancy happen in a virgin. This must-have blown Mary’s mind, even to consider that she could get pregnant as a virgin. God uses Gabriel to explain to Mary that God the Holy Spirit, would plant the seed in her womb. Then Gabriel tells Mary that Elizabeth (her cousin, but not sure if she’s a first cousin or a more distant cousin, but they were cousins) is pregnant. This was a miracle because Elizabeth was barren (unable to have children). So Gabriel is confirming that God had already performed a miracle in Elizabeth, and God would perform an even greater miracle in Mary. Then God uses Gabriel to say what we all need to be reminded of daily, “for nothing is impossible with God.” Just as Mary questioned Gabriel about how she was going to become pregnant, being a virgin, we too can ask God when things in our lives seem to be impossible. God does not mind the questions, but when He answers, we need to show Him we believe by responding in obedience to whatever He has shown us. Mary showed great faith in her response to Gabriel, “the bondslave of the Lord; may it be done to me according to your word.” Mary believed, and the angel departed.
