Day 3

Scripture to Read: 1 Corinthians 1:22–23

God led Paul to tell us how the message of Christ is seen by the Jews and the Gentiles. We read in 1 Corinthians 1:22–23, “For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to Jews a stumbling block and to Gentiles foolishness.” In the time when God had Paul write these words, the Jews were looking for the sign of a miraculous Messianic deliverance, much like the apostles when they asked Jesus in Acts 1:6, “Lord, is it at this time You are restoring the kingdom to Israel?” The Jews were not looking for the message of the cross, but for the deliverance from a godless Roman Empire. What they desired was not bad, but their complete rejection of Jesus as their Messiah was completely wrong. So, the message of Christ was a stumbling block to many Jews; that is why both then, and even still now today, many Jews still believe their Messiah has not come yet. The Greek culture of Paul’s day valued the pursuit of wisdom, again, not a bad thing in and of itself. They sought human wisdom and knowledge, but it came at the cost of throwing aside God’s wisdom. Many Gentiles refused salvation through Christ because they had allowed themselves to be deceived by only seeking human/fleshly wisdom. Searching for the truth ought to be the goal for every person. When people reject Christ and His Word, they have chosen to be tripped up by this world and to be fooled into thinking Christ is not the answer.

Challenge & Application

Why is the message of the cross still a stumbling block to the Jews and foolishness to the Gentiles? How can you help those who are searching for truth, and what evidence has God given you to show them the way?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

The message of Christ being crucified and then defeating death three days later seems utterly foolish to those who are dead in their sins (Ephesians 2:1–3) because they have chosen to reject the message of the cross. That is the message God had Paul write in 1 Corinthians 1:18–19, “For the word of the cross is foolishness to those who are per...

Day 2

God had Paul ask the following in 1 Corinthians 1:20, “Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age?” Then, God reveals through Paul that He has made the world’s wisdom look foolish. How did God do it? Well, He tells us in 1 Corinthians 1:21, “For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not ...

Day 4

Today we read in 1 Corinthians 1:24–25, “but to those who are the called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men.” As God led Paul to write, Paul knew how his life had been transformed by Christ, and he had seen man...

Day 5

We read in 1 Corinthians 1:26, “For consider your calling, brethren, that there were not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble;” When we examine who we are, most of us, whether we like it or not, are pretty average. Most of us will never win a gold medal in the Olympics, we’ll never play a professional sport, we’ll...

Day 6

As God continued to have Paul write we read in 1 Corinthians 1:27–29, “but God has chosen the foolish things of the world to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to shame the things which are strong, 28 and the base things of the world and the despised God has chosen, the things that are not, so that He may nullify ...

Day 7

God gives us a great reminder today as we read the following in 1 Corinthians 1:30–31, “But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption, 31 so that, just as it is written, ‘Let him who boasts, boast in the Lord.’” First, God reminds us that He chose us long befor...
