Day 1

Scripture to Read: Luke 19:11-14

There was a crowd, so Jesus taught another parable. God led Luke to write this in Luke 19:11–14, “While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. 12 So He said, ‘A nobleman went to a distant country to receive a kingdom for himself, and then return. 13 And he called ten of his slaves, and gave them ten minas and said to them, ‘Do business with this until I come back.’ 14 But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’” Jesus knew that many in the crowd expected Him to establish His Kingdom here on earth while He was there with them. But Jesus knew that He was going to Jerusalem to be rejected, crucified, raised, and then exalted. The nobleman represented Jesus. Jesus would eventually leave to receive full authority (Ephesians 1:20–22), pointing to His heavenly Kingdom. The phrase “and then return” points to Christ’s future return. This parable includes the period between Jesus’s first coming and His return as well as the certainty of His future reign and judgment. To “Do business” means to put the money to productive use. Spiritually, this refers to being faithful with all Christ has entrusted to His people. Every servant of the Lord is accountable to be a faithful servant and not passive. Those who “hated him” represent those who reject Jesus. They don’t want Him as King.

Challenge & Application

When you consider all our Lord has entrusted to you, the gospel; time & opportunities; spiritual gifts; material resources; positions of responsibility; and influence over others, how are you stewarding it all? How can you grow in your stewardship?

Day 2

In this parable, we find two groups of people. There are the servants who acknowledge the nobleman and are responsible for serving him, and then there are the citizens who reject his authority. No one can choose to be neutral toward Jesus, for they must either surrender to Him as Lord and King or resist Him as their King. We read in Luke 19:1...

Day 3

The first servant had been a wise servant and whatever he chose to do with the one mina the nobleman had entrusted to him, the result was that it multiplied to ten minas. We read the nobleman’s response in Luke 19:17, “And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority...

Jesus then told about the second servant’s report, as we read in Luke 19:18–19, “The second came, saying, ‘Your mina, master, has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’” We immediately see that the second servant reported a fivefold increase. Because of his faithfulness to invest the one mina well,...

Day 5

Things take a shift as Jesus shared about the third servant’s report. We read in Luke 19:20–21, “Another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.’” Let’s first take a step ...

Day 6

The nobleman’s response might be chilling, but it is absolutely right and just, for the nobleman had entrusted his resources to the servants. God led Luke to write in Luke 19:22–23, “He *said to him, ‘By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping ...

Day 7

The master brought upon the third servant the consequences for the third servant’s disobedience. God led Luke to write this in Luke 19:24–27, “Then he said to the bystanders, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas already.’ 26 I tell you that to everyone w...
