Day 4

Scripture to Read: Luke 19:18-19

Jesus then told about the second servant’s report, as we read in Luke 19:18–19, “The second came, saying, ‘Your mina, master, has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’” We immediately see that the second servant reported a fivefold increase. Because of his faithfulness to invest the one mina well, he received five cities as a reward. We need to note that the second servant was never compared negatively with the first. Even though the second servant did not have as much to give to the nobleman, he was still rewarded for his service. The king’s evaluation seems to be measured by what each servant actually did, not based on some sort of competition with each other. This parable doesn’t teach that every believer will receive exactly the same reward for their service to our Lord Jesus Christ. What it does teach is that the king sees and honors faithful service even when the results are not the same. The first servant’s tenfold gain wasn’t presented as the required standard that everyone had to meet. So, when the second servant reported the fivefold gain, it was also complimented and rewarded. Jesus wanted His listeners, and us, to understand that productive faithfulness is what He’s looking for with what each person has received from Him. Even though many might be given the exact same gifts, Jesus is not going to compare our service with others, but whether we were faithful with what He knows He has given to each one of us.

Challenge & Application

Since Jesus desires us to be faithful servants, how faithful are you with what you know He has already given you? How do you guard your heart from comparing yourself to others?

Day 1

There was a crowd, so Jesus taught another parable. God led Luke to write this in Luke 19:11–14, “While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. 12 So He said, ‘A nobleman went to a distant country to receive ...

Day 2

In this parable, we find two groups of people. There are the servants who acknowledge the nobleman and are responsible for serving him, and then there are the citizens who reject his authority. No one can choose to be neutral toward Jesus, for they must either surrender to Him as Lord and King or resist Him as their King. We read in Luke 19:1...

Day 3

The first servant had been a wise servant and whatever he chose to do with the one mina the nobleman had entrusted to him, the result was that it multiplied to ten minas. We read the nobleman’s response in Luke 19:17, “And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority...

Day 5

Things take a shift as Jesus shared about the third servant’s report. We read in Luke 19:20–21, “Another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.’” Let’s first take a step ...

Day 6

The nobleman’s response might be chilling, but it is absolutely right and just, for the nobleman had entrusted his resources to the servants. God led Luke to write in Luke 19:22–23, “He *said to him, ‘By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping ...

Day 7

The master brought upon the third servant the consequences for the third servant’s disobedience. God led Luke to write this in Luke 19:24–27, “Then he said to the bystanders, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas already.’ 26 I tell you that to everyone w...
