Day 5

Scripture to Read: Luke 19:20-21

Things take a shift as Jesus shared about the third servant’s report. We read in Luke 19:20–21, “Another came, saying, ‘Master, here is your mina, which I kept put away in a handkerchief; 21 for I was afraid of you, because you are an exacting man; you take up what you did not lay down and reap what you did not sow.’” Let’s first take a step back and remember what the nobleman had told each one of the ten servants back in Luke 19:13, “Do business with this until I come back.” The nobleman gave them specific instructions, an outright command to “do business.” The third servant chose to disobey that command and instead did what he felt was right in his own eyes. The third servant failed because he did nothing with the entrusted resource. The third servant’s excuse reveals his problem: his fear led him to do absolutely nothing. The third servant also tried to justify his disobedience by describing the nobleman as an “exacting man,” meaning he was severe, someone who took what he did not deposit and would reap what he did not sow. Whether this description of the nobleman is accurate or not is not the issue. The issue is that the servant used his opinion of the nobleman to justify his disobedience to the nobleman. When people build their opinion of God based on lies about God, fear of criticism or failure, or resentment toward God, then their opinion is going to lead them away from God. Though the servant called him Master, his actions revealed his resistance, not faithful submission.

Challenge & Application

Why did the third servant fail? What can cause people to have an unbiblical view of God and lead them to total refusal to follow God?

Day 1

There was a crowd, so Jesus taught another parable. God led Luke to write this in Luke 19:11–14, “While they were listening to these things, Jesus went on to tell a parable, because He was near Jerusalem, and they supposed that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. 12 So He said, ‘A nobleman went to a distant country to receive ...

Day 2

In this parable, we find two groups of people. There are the servants who acknowledge the nobleman and are responsible for serving him, and then there are the citizens who reject his authority. No one can choose to be neutral toward Jesus, for they must either surrender to Him as Lord and King or resist Him as their King. We read in Luke 19:1...

Day 3

The first servant had been a wise servant and whatever he chose to do with the one mina the nobleman had entrusted to him, the result was that it multiplied to ten minas. We read the nobleman’s response in Luke 19:17, “And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave, because you have been faithful in a very little thing, you are to be in authority...

Day 4

Jesus then told about the second servant’s report, as we read in Luke 19:18–19, “The second came, saying, ‘Your mina, master, has made five minas.’ 19 And he said to him also, ‘And you are to be over five cities.’” We immediately see that the second servant reported a fivefold increase. Because of his faithfulness to invest the one mina well,...

Day 6

The nobleman’s response might be chilling, but it is absolutely right and just, for the nobleman had entrusted his resources to the servants. God led Luke to write in Luke 19:22–23, “He *said to him, ‘By your own words I will judge you, you worthless slave. Did you know that I am an exacting man, taking up what I did not lay down and reaping ...

Day 7

The master brought upon the third servant the consequences for the third servant’s disobedience. God led Luke to write this in Luke 19:24–27, “Then he said to the bystanders, ‘Take the mina away from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25 And they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas already.’ 26 I tell you that to everyone w...
