Day 1

Scripture to Read: Luke 20:1-2

Pride is probably one of the worst sins for all mankind. Not that God puts our sins on some kind of measuring scale, but pride is usually the sin that leads to almost every other sin. Pride is when we get in our mind an excessive self-importance, a godless arrogance that we are above those around us. Some of the people Jesus dealt with, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders, were a godless group of men who were overtaken with their fleshly pride. God had Luke share with us the following in Luke 20:1–2, “On one of the days while He was teaching the people in the temple and preaching the gospel, the chief priests and the scribes with the elders confronted Him, 2 and they spoke, saying to Him, ‘Tell us by what authority You are doing these things, or who is the one who gave You this authority?’” By this time in Jesus’s ministry, He had performed numerous miracles proving Himself to be God in the flesh, but the chief priests, the scribes, and the elders were so blinded by their pride that they still had no clue they were addressing the God who had created them. Their question reveals their arrogance; if they had known who Jesus is, they would never have asked such a prideful question. God does not mind us asking questions, but we must ask with a humble heart, seeking to know Him more intimately and to follow Him wholeheartedly. Anything less than this will most likely lead us down the wrong path.

Challenge & Application

Why is the sin of pride so destructive and dangerous? How have you seen pride destroy people around you or even lead you down the path of destruction?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 2

Jesus knew the proud hearts of the chief priests and the scribes with the elders, so, God had Luke record this in Luke 20:3–8, “Jesus answered and said to them, ‘I will also ask you a question, and you tell Me: 4 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?’ 5 They reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say,...

Day 3

Jesus was in the final days of His earthly ministry, but He never wavered from sharing the truth of the gospel with those around Him. Again, Jesus chose to share another parable. The vineyard represents God’s people, the nation of Israel, but Jesus turns the attention to the religious leaders in Israel, for they were given the responsibility ...

Day 4

Jesus spoke in the temple during His final week before His crucifixion. There were many in the crowd listening to Him, including the chief priests, scribes, and elders. These leaders had challenged His authority in Luke 20:1–2. As we know, the owner of the vineyard represents God. The vineyard represents God’s covenant people, those who surre...

Day 5

The response of the religious and political leaders reveals how blind they were to God and His Word. We read in Luke 20:19, “The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them.” The hearts of the religious and political leaders wer...

Day 6

Jesus often went from one challenge to another, and that is what God had Luke record in Luke 20:27–40. God had Luke share with us that the Sadducees then came to challenge Jesus about the resurrection because they did not believe in a resurrection from the dead. According to God’s Law in Deuteronomy 25:5, “When brothers live together and one ...

Day 7

Jesus then, in Luke 20:41–45, challenged His listeners, and especially the religious leaders, about God’s promise to David that his royal line would continue and that one of his descendants would have an enduring kingdom. The problem with the religious leaders of Jesus’s day was that they had a picture of the Messiah as just a human royal des...
