Day 6

Scripture to Read: Luke 20:27-40

Jesus often went from one challenge to another, and that is what God had Luke record in Luke 20:27–40. God had Luke share with us that the Sadducees then came to challenge Jesus about the resurrection because they did not believe in a resurrection from the dead. According to God’s Law in Deuteronomy 25:5, “When brothers live together and one of them dies and has no son, the wife of the deceased shall not be married outside the family to a strange man. Her husband’s brother shall go in to her and take her to himself as wife and perform the duty of a husband’s brother to her.” The Sadducees, knowing this law, painted a scenario of a woman whose first husband died, so the next brother to her deceased spouse married her, and so on until she had been married to seven brothers from the same family. The Sadducees wanted to know which one of the brothers would be her husband in heaven. Jesus teaches an incredible truth that every believer needs to understand. There is only ONE Father in heaven, God the Father. There are no aunts, uncles, cousins, husbands, wives, dads, or moms in heaven, but only children of God through Christ Jesus our Lord. God’s children are brothers and sisters, and we will worship Him as our Lord, God, and King. We don’t become angels either, though Jesus says we’ll be like them. God confirms in Romans 8:16–17 and 1 John 3:1–2 that we are His children; therefore, imitate Him (Ephesians 5:1) just as children imitate their earthly fathers.

Challenge & Application

What did you learn about the resurrection that you did not know before, and how does it change some of the things you believed? How are you currently imitating your Father in heaven so others are led to Christ as Lord?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Pride is probably one of the worst sins for all mankind. Not that God puts our sins on some kind of measuring scale, but pride is usually the sin that leads to almost every other sin. Pride is when we get in our mind an excessive self-importance, a godless arrogance that we are above those around us. Some of the people Jesus dealt with, the c...

Day 2

Jesus knew the proud hearts of the chief priests and the scribes with the elders, so, God had Luke record this in Luke 20:3–8, “Jesus answered and said to them, ‘I will also ask you a question, and you tell Me: 4 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?’ 5 They reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say,...

Day 3

Jesus was in the final days of His earthly ministry, but He never wavered from sharing the truth of the gospel with those around Him. Again, Jesus chose to share another parable. The vineyard represents God’s people, the nation of Israel, but Jesus turns the attention to the religious leaders in Israel, for they were given the responsibility ...

Day 4

Jesus spoke in the temple during His final week before His crucifixion. There were many in the crowd listening to Him, including the chief priests, scribes, and elders. These leaders had challenged His authority in Luke 20:1–2. As we know, the owner of the vineyard represents God. The vineyard represents God’s covenant people, those who surre...

Day 5

The response of the religious and political leaders reveals how blind they were to God and His Word. We read in Luke 20:19, “The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them.” The hearts of the religious and political leaders wer...

Day 7

Jesus then, in Luke 20:41–45, challenged His listeners, and especially the religious leaders, about God’s promise to David that his royal line would continue and that one of his descendants would have an enduring kingdom. The problem with the religious leaders of Jesus’s day was that they had a picture of the Messiah as just a human royal des...
