Day 4

Scripture to Read: Luke 20:16-18

Jesus spoke in the temple during His final week before His crucifixion. There were many in the crowd listening to Him, including the chief priests, scribes, and elders. These leaders had challenged His authority in Luke 20:1–2. As we know, the owner of the vineyard represents God. The vineyard represents God’s covenant people, those who surrender to Him as God and King. The vine-growers represent Israel’s religious and political leaders, who were entrusted with guiding God’s people to worship only God. The servants represent the kings, judges, and prophets whom Israel’s leaders repeatedly rejected and mistreated. The beloved son represents Jesus our Lord. In this parable, Jesus exposed the religious and political leaders’ misuse of their authority. God had entrusted His people to them. But those religious and political leaders resisted God’s messengers and were about to reject and kill God’s Son. Jesus made it clear that God would bring His judgment. God removed the unfaithful stewards and appointed others who would produce the required fruit. Jesus also quoted Psalm 118:22. The builders reject the stone, but that stone is chosen by God for the most important position in the structure. For those who fall on the stone are those who stumble over Jesus. These are those who encounter Jesus but refuse to surrender to Him as Lord—the result is being shattered. But what’s even worse is the stone that falls on the person, crushing them. This represents God’s final judgment, which will fall on all who oppose Christ as Lord. That is why we must seek to lead others to know and follow Him

Challenge & Application

What are some aspects of the parable that reveal to you how lost this world is today? Why is it critical for us to seek to lead everyone we know to know Jesus and to follow Him?

Day 1

Pride is probably one of the worst sins for all mankind. Not that God puts our sins on some kind of measuring scale, but pride is usually the sin that leads to almost every other sin. Pride is when we get in our mind an excessive self-importance, a godless arrogance that we are above those around us. Some of the people Jesus dealt with, the c...

Day 2

Jesus knew the proud hearts of the chief priests and the scribes with the elders, so, God had Luke record this in Luke 20:3–8, “Jesus answered and said to them, ‘I will also ask you a question, and you tell Me: 4 Was the baptism of John from heaven or from men?’ 5 They reasoned among themselves, saying, ‘If we say, ‘From heaven,’ He will say,...

Day 3

Jesus was in the final days of His earthly ministry, but He never wavered from sharing the truth of the gospel with those around Him. Again, Jesus chose to share another parable. The vineyard represents God’s people, the nation of Israel, but Jesus turns the attention to the religious leaders in Israel, for they were given the responsibility ...

Day 5

The response of the religious and political leaders reveals how blind they were to God and His Word. We read in Luke 20:19, “The scribes and the chief priests tried to lay hands on Him that very hour, and they feared the people; for they understood that He spoke this parable against them.” The hearts of the religious and political leaders wer...

Day 6

Jesus often went from one challenge to another, and that is what God had Luke record in Luke 20:27–40. God had Luke share with us that the Sadducees then came to challenge Jesus about the resurrection because they did not believe in a resurrection from the dead. According to God’s Law in Deuteronomy 25:5, “When brothers live together and one ...

Day 7

Jesus then, in Luke 20:41–45, challenged His listeners, and especially the religious leaders, about God’s promise to David that his royal line would continue and that one of his descendants would have an enduring kingdom. The problem with the religious leaders of Jesus’s day was that they had a picture of the Messiah as just a human royal des...
