Day 2

Scripture to Read: Luke 11:21–23

Through the miracles He performed, Jesus showed people that He was God in the flesh. But even as He performed miracles, many still doubted. Since some of the people thought that Jesus cast out a demon by the power of another demon, Jesus then said this in Luke 11:21–23, “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are undisturbed. 22 But when someone stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, he takes away from him all his armor on which he had relied and distributes his plunder. 23 He who is not with Me is against Me; and he who does not gather with Me, scatters.” Jesus used the image of a strong man guarding his house to show that a powerful defender must be overcome for the enemy’s house to be overtaken. Satan represents the “strong man,” and through his power, he keeps people under evil (2 Timothy 2:26), but when someone stronger, Jesus, overpowers the strong man, the strong man’s house can be freed. This reveals Jesus’ authority over demonic powers and His mission to deliver people from them. Then, Jesus makes it clear that whoever is not with Him is against Him. There is no neutral ground between God’s kingdom and Satan’s kingdom. People are either choosing to follow Jesus and His work of deliverance and restoration or they’re opposing it. Jesus’ mission requires a decisive response. We must lead people to Jesus so they follow Him as Lord. To disciple others well requires that we take an active stance, for passive neutrality is not an option.

Challenge & Application

As a Christian, how are you choosing to follow Jesus and His work of deliverance and restoration each day? When it comes to following Jesus, why is passive neutrality not an option?

Day 1

Jesus continually fulfilled the Father’s perfect will each day. Nothing Jesus did was by accident and nothing He said was haphazard. God had Luke record this in Luke 11:14–20, “And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute; when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed. 15 But some of them said, ‘He casts out d...

Jesus wanted the crowd to understand that spiritual warfare is real. God had Luke record this in Luke 11:24–26, “When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. 26 T...

Day 4

Jesus continued teaching, and what He said next probably shocked most of those there. God had Luke record in Luke 11:29–32, “As the crowds were increasing, He began to say, ‘This generation is a wicked generation; it seeks for a sign, and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah. 30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevite...

Day 5

Jesus used many illustrations in His teaching. God had Luke record this in Luke 11:33–36, “No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it ...

Day 6

Though Jesus had to rebuke the crowd several times, He loved them and sought to reach them so they’d understand He came to die for them. Luke even recorded this in Luke 11:37–40, “Now when He had spoken, a Pharisee *asked Him to have lunch with him; and He went in, and reclined at the table. 38 When the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised that ...

Day 7

Jesus wanted the Pharisees and lawyers to see the true condition of their hearts, so, God had Luke record the woes to the scribes, Pharisees, and lawyers in Luke 11:42–54. Jesus first pointed out that though they tithed, it was hypocritical because they neglected God’s justice and love. Jesus also rebuked them for striving to be revered and f...
