Day 6

Scripture to Read: Luke 11:37–41

Though Jesus had to rebuke the crowd several times, He loved them and sought to reach them so they’d understand He came to die for them. Luke even recorded this in Luke 11:37–40, “Now when He had spoken, a Pharisee *asked Him to have lunch with him; and He went in, and reclined at the table. 38 When the Pharisee saw it, he was surprised that He had not first ceremonially washed before the meal. 39 But the Lord said to him, ‘Now you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and of the platter; but inside of you, you are full of robbery and wickedness. 40 You foolish ones, did not He who made the outside make the inside also?’” Jesus went to eat with a Pharisee, showing His love for him. When the Pharisee judged Jesus for not washing, it was because Jesus had not followed the rigid requirements of ceremonial washing which most Pharisees practiced. Jesus lovingly rebuked the Pharisee for focusing only on outward cleanliness while his heart was in desperate need of cleansing and healing. It doesn’t matter how good someone looks on the outside or how impressive they dress or how powerful they might be, for God does not focus on the outward but on the inward (1 Samuel 16:7, 1 Chronicles 28:9, Luke 16:15). God does not want us to fall into the trap of being so outwardly focused that we miss the areas of our heart that are not fully surrendered to Him as Lord. We must examine our lives daily to walk in His righteousness.

Challenge & Application

What’s the problem with only focusing on the outward appearance of ourselves and others? Why is it critical to continually examine our hearts through the lens of God’s Word and His Holy Spirit in us?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus continually fulfilled the Father’s perfect will each day. Nothing Jesus did was by accident and nothing He said was haphazard. God had Luke record this in Luke 11:14–20, “And He was casting out a demon, and it was mute; when the demon had gone out, the mute man spoke; and the crowds were amazed. 15 But some of them said, ‘He casts out d...

Day 2

Through the miracles He performed, Jesus showed people that He was God in the flesh. But even as He performed miracles, many still doubted. Since some of the people thought that Jesus cast out a demon by the power of another demon, Jesus then said this in Luke 11:21–23, “When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions ar...

Day 3

Jesus wanted the crowd to understand that spiritual warfare is real. God had Luke record this in Luke 11:24–26, “When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’ 25 And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. 26 T...

Day 4

Jesus continued teaching, and what He said next probably shocked most of those there. God had Luke record in Luke 11:29–32, “As the crowds were increasing, He began to say, ‘This generation is a wicked generation; it seeks for a sign, and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah. 30 For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevite...

Day 5

Jesus used many illustrations in His teaching. God had Luke record this in Luke 11:33–36, “No one, after lighting a lamp, puts it away in a cellar nor under a basket, but on the lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. 34 The eye is the lamp of your body; when your eye is clear, your whole body also is full of light; but when it ...

Day 7

Jesus wanted the Pharisees and lawyers to see the true condition of their hearts, so, God had Luke record the woes to the scribes, Pharisees, and lawyers in Luke 11:42–54. Jesus first pointed out that though they tithed, it was hypocritical because they neglected God’s justice and love. Jesus also rebuked them for striving to be revered and f...
