Scripture to Read: Luke 12:22–30
Jesus warned against covetousness, then, Jesus said this in Luke 12:22–23, “For this reason I say to you, do not worry about your life, as to what you will eat; nor for your body, as to what you will put on. 23 For life is more than food, and the body more than clothing.” Greed and worry are both incredible stumbling blocks for anyone. Greed constantly tells us that we need more, and that even when more is attained it’s still not enough. Worry on the other hand is always afraid that what we have will not last and that we’ll be lacking. The problem with both worry and greed is that they distract us from resting in, clinging to, trusting in, and relying on our Lord God Almighty. Jesus goes on in Luke 12:24–29 to say, “consider the ravens” and to “consider the lilies” as examples of God’s creation and how God feeds them and clothes them, and if He cares so much about them, then He will definitely take care of all who are created in His image. Jesus even said in Luke 12:30, “For all these things the nations of the world eagerly seek; but your Father knows that you need these things.” Jesus made it clear that those who worship false gods are constantly worried about these things, but for those who worship the One True God, we must constantly remember that He already knows our needs and will meet them each and every day. Our fellowship with Him strengthens our trust in Him.
