Day 2

Scripture to Read: Luke 18:2-5

Jesus began to lay out the parable for the people He was teaching. We read in Luke 18:2–5, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. 3 There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.’ 4 For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, 5 yet because this widow bothers me, I will give her legal protection, otherwise by continually coming she will wear me out.’” It’s interesting that Jesus plainly gives us the picture of a judge who is just downright mean and seems to have zero compassion for anyone, even for widows. Jesus wanted to make sure everyone understood that this widow was facing what seemed like a very hopeless situation because the judge had no fear of God and respected no one. But because the widow was persistent, unwilling to be deterred by the judge’s lack of compassion, care, or kindness, the judge decided to grant her the legal protection she requested so she’d stop bothering him. The widow chose not to lose heart in this seemingly hopeless situation with the judge. The widow knew that the judge was the only one who could give her what she needed, so she was diligent in making her requests until he finally granted her request. God wants us to come to Him with every need, for He is the only one who can meet our needs.

Challenge & Application

Why do we often give up so easily in our prayers and decide that it’s just not worth it? What are some things God taught you about the widow, and how can you apply this to your prayer life?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

This week, we’re starting by examining prayer. Prayer should be, for all Christians, a normal part of our daily lives. We should be in such intimate fellowship with our Heavenly Father, through our Lord Jesus Christ, that prayer comes just as easily as breathing. Now, if prayer is still difficult for you, don’t worry because God even tells us...

Day 3

As He taught the parable about the unjust judge, Jesus then shared this in Luke 18:6–8, “And the Lord said, ‘Hear what the unrighteous judge *said; 7 now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? 8 I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when ...

Day 4

Jesus continued teaching through parables, and the next parable concerns a Pharisee and a tax collector. God had Luke record the following in Luke 18:9–12, “And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: 10 ‘Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharis...

Day 5

We have examined the prayer of the Pharisee, and now we read what Jesus shared about the tax collector’s prayer in Luke 18:13–14, “But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went to his h...

Day 6

God led Luke to record many of the ministries of our Lord Jesus Christ, and as we learned yesterday about the Pharisee and the tax collector, we saw that the tax collector was “justified” before God the Father because of his humble, repentant heart. Then, Luke recorded this in Luke 18:15, “And they were bringing even their babies to Him so th...

Day 7

God showed us yesterday that everyone is welcome to come to Christ; therefore, we must continually invite everyone to humbly come before Christ, surrender to Him, and receive all He has to offer them. God had Luke share this in Luke 18:16–17, “But Jesus called for them, saying, ‘Permit the children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for t...
