Day 6

Scripture to Read: Luke 18:15

God led Luke to record many of the ministries of our Lord Jesus Christ, and as we learned yesterday about the Pharisee and the tax collector, we saw that the tax collector was “justified” before God the Father because of his humble, repentant heart. Then, Luke recorded this in Luke 18:15, “And they were bringing even their babies to Him so that He would touch them, but when the disciples saw it, they began rebuking them.” All the people who came to hear Jesus teach also brought their babies to Him just so He could touch them. This verse is incredibly crucial to Jesus’ ministry. We will see tomorrow Jesus’ response about the kingdom of God belonging to those who receive the kingdom of God like a child, but for now, we only know that the disciples thought that bringing these babies to Jesus was a waste of time. The reason the disciples responded as they did was that in that day and time, children were considered low-status; therefore, the disciples probably thought that all these babies were becoming an interruption to Jesus as He taught them and the crowds. What God wants us to see, though, is that Jesus is approachable to anyone who will come. God also wants us to know that babies are dependent on others and their dependence is not a sign of weakness but of need. No one comes to Jesus until they recognize their need for Him and their willingness to place their faith in Him. Finally, we must guard against creating barriers for those who do willingly come to Christ.

Challenge & Application

Why did the disciples object to parents bringing infants to Jesus? What must we do in order to come to Christ and not to ever think someone is unworthy of coming to Christ?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

This week, we’re starting by examining prayer. Prayer should be, for all Christians, a normal part of our daily lives. We should be in such intimate fellowship with our Heavenly Father, through our Lord Jesus Christ, that prayer comes just as easily as breathing. Now, if prayer is still difficult for you, don’t worry because God even tells us...

Day 2

Jesus began to lay out the parable for the people He was teaching. We read in Luke 18:2–5, “In a certain city there was a judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. 3 There was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me legal protection from my opponent.’ 4 For a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said t...

As He taught the parable about the unjust judge, Jesus then shared this in Luke 18:6–8, “And the Lord said, ‘Hear what the unrighteous judge *said; 7 now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? 8 I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when ...

Day 4

Jesus continued teaching through parables, and the next parable concerns a Pharisee and a tax collector. God had Luke record the following in Luke 18:9–12, “And He also told this parable to some people who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and viewed others with contempt: 10 ‘Two men went up into the temple to pray, one a Pharis...

Day 5

We have examined the prayer of the Pharisee, and now we read what Jesus shared about the tax collector’s prayer in Luke 18:13–14, “But the tax collector, standing some distance away, was even unwilling to lift up his eyes to heaven, but was beating his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, the sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went to his h...

Day 7

God showed us yesterday that everyone is welcome to come to Christ; therefore, we must continually invite everyone to humbly come before Christ, surrender to Him, and receive all He has to offer them. God had Luke share this in Luke 18:16–17, “But Jesus called for them, saying, ‘Permit the children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for t...
