Scripture to Read: Luke 18:6-8
As He taught the parable about the unjust judge, Jesus then shared this in Luke 18:6–8, “And the Lord said, ‘Hear what the unrighteous judge *said; 7 now, will not God bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? 8 I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?’” Jesus wanted to make sure that everyone learned a lesson from the unjust judge. In the end, though the judge was unjust, he finally made the right decision. Then, Jesus pointed them to God the Father to help them see that God would give justice to His chosen people when they cry out to Him both day and night. This is not about badgering God to simply get a selfish request. This is about asking God for what we know; He, as Judge, will do according to His perfect plan and purpose. God is a God of justice, and His justice will be carried out. But then, Jesus asks a key question at the end as to whether He will find faith on earth. This closing question ties together prayer with faith that perseveres under pressure. That is why God tells us in James 1:3–4, “that the testing of your faith produces endurance. 4 And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” Our prayers must be steady, never just a one-time ask and then quitting.
