Day 4

Scripture to Read: Luke 19:37-38

Jesus had many followers during His earthly ministry. The problem was that most of them expected Jesus to conquer the godless Roman Empire and establish an earthly kingdom. Jesus did not come for that reason, but He came to set the spiritual captives free. But the people were still incredibly excited about their King; of course, it was for the wrong reasons. God had Luke record this in Luke 19:37–38, “As soon as He was approaching, near the descent of the Mount of Olives, the whole crowd of the disciples began to praise God joyfully with a loud voice for all the miracles which they had seen, 38 shouting ‘Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord; Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!’” The people were praising God for all the miracles they had seen Christ perform. Their praise could be seen as evidence that Jesus is God’s appointed King, but again, they were thinking of an earthly King and nothing more. As they shouted, they were quoting Psalm 118:26. This is significant because it connected Jesus with their hope for a king from the line of David, who would bring God’s promised salvation. Jesus was and is the promised King in the line of David, but He did not come the first time to reign as an earthly King; He came to usher in His Heavenly Kingdom, which all mankind can partake in through His death, burial, and resurrection. We must help others see that Christ has fulfilled all the Messianic prophecies and is the one True Messiah.

Challenge & Application

Why is it important to understand that Christ did fulfill all of the Messianic prophecies in the OT? Since Jesus’s kingdom isn’t about this earth, but about being with Him, how are you helping lead others to know and follow Him?
