Day 5

Scripture to Read: Luke 9:12–17

God has used the disciples to preach the gospel, cast out demons, and heal people wherever they went. The disciples had not only seen God at work through Christ our Lord, but they experienced firsthand the power of the Holy Spirit working through them. Then, God had Luke record this in Luke 9:12–17, “Now the day was ending, and the twelve came and said to Him, ‘Send the crowd away, that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging and get something to eat; for here we are in a desolate place.’ 13 But He said to them, ‘You give them something to eat!’ And they said, ‘We have no more than five loaves and two fish, unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.’ 14 (For there were about five thousand men.) And He said to His disciples, ‘Have them sit down to eat in groups of about fifty each.’ 15 They did so, and had them all sit down. 16 Then He took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, He blessed them, and broke them, and kept giving them to the disciples to set before the people. 17 And they all ate and were satisfied; and the broken pieces which they had left over were picked up, twelve baskets full.” Jesus challenged the disciples to feed the crowd but the disciples could only see their own limitations. They quickly went from sharing how God’s power had flowed through them to suddenly seeing only their limited resources.

Challenge & Application

How have you seen God work miraculously in your life only to quickly doubt Him in some other area of need? How do we guard our hearts and minds from losing sight of God’s constant handiwork in and through us?

Day 1

In Luke 8, God had Luke record how Jesus healed the demon-possessed man, how He also healed the woman who had suffered from a twelve-year hemorrhage, and how Jesus raised Jairus’ daughter from the dead. But then, Jesus got the disciples ready to go and do what they had seen our Lord do. God had Luke record this in Luke 9:1–2, “And He called t...

Day 3

The disciples knew what they were to do, and God had Luke tell us this in Luke 9:6, “Departing, they began going throughout the villages, preaching the gospel and healing everywhere.” The disciples did not question what Jesus had sent them out to do, and as followers of Christ, we must carry out the mission He has called each of us to as well...

Day 4

We get to serve our Lord every day because God has told us in Ephesians 2:10, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” So, we have good works to accomplish every day for our Lord. When we walk in those good works, it is always exciting to share with othe...

Day 7

Peter had just proclaimed that Jesus was the one true Messiah sent by God the Father. Then, Jesus made it clear what it would cost to follow Him as Lord, as God had Luke record in Luke 9:23–27, “And He was saying to them all, ‘If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me. 24 For whoever wi...
