Day 1

Scripture to Read: Luke 9:28–32

We read in Luke 9:28–36 about Jesus being transfigured in front of Peter, James, and John. After eight days had passed, Jesus invited Peter, James, and John to join Him on a mountain to pray. As they were praying, Jesus’ appearance changed. God had Matthew record how Jesus’ face shone like the sun in Matthew 17:2. God had Matthew and Mark both use the word “transfigured” to describe what happened to Jesus. For a brief time, Jesus took on the appearance that more appropriately fit Him as the King of Glory than as a humble man. Also, Moses and Elijah appeared, and we read this in Luke 9:31, “who, appearing in glory, were speaking of His departure which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.” God does not reveal to us how Peter, James, and John knew it was Moses and Elijah, but they most assuredly knew it was them. Moses represents the Law of God, Elijah represents the prophets of God, and Jesus came to fulfill both God’s Law and the 300-plus prophecies that had been prophesied about Him. We also see God’s incredible grace here. Moses had disobeyed God’s command in Numbers 20:8–13, and God told him that he would not enter the promised land because of his disobedience (also read Deuteronomy 3:23–29, Deuteronomy 32:48–52, and Deuteronomy 34:1–5). Then, almost 1,500 years later, God allowed Moses to stand in the promised land and talk with our Lord. This is also a reminder that Jesus is God, King, and Lord of the living; live wholeheartedly for Him.

Day 2

As we read Luke 9:33, we clearly see that Moses and Elijah were leaving. Peter got so caught up in the moment that he spoke without thinking about what he said. Peter said to our Lord, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Without knowing it, Peter had put Mo...

Day 3

God had Luke record the following in Luke 9:37–42, “On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. 38 And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only boy, 39 and a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at t...

God then had Luke record this in Luke 9:43–45, “And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. But while everyone was marveling at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples, 44 ‘Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.’ 45 But they did not understand this statement, and i...

Day 5

In yesterday’s devotion, we learned how the disciples did not understand what Jesus said about being turned over to the hands of men. Today, we get a little further glimpse of why their minds were blinded. God had Luke record this in Luke 9:46–48, “An argument started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. 47 But Jesus, knowing...

Day 6

God had Luke record a couple of different events in Luke 9:49–56. First, we read in Luke 9:49–50, “John answered and said, ‘Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us.’ 50 But Jesus said to him, ‘Do not hinder him; for he who is not against you is for you.’” Joh...

Day 7

God had Luke then record what Jesus had laid out about following Him. Jesus never painted an unrealistic picture of what it meant to follow Him. We read in Luke 9:57–62, “As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, ‘I will follow You wherever You go.’ 58 And Jesus said to him, ‘The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have ne...
