Day 6

Scripture to Read: Luke 9:49–56

God had Luke record a couple of different events in Luke 9:49–56. First, we read in Luke 9:49–50, “John answered and said, ‘Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us.’ 50 But Jesus said to him, ‘Do not hinder him; for he who is not against you is for you.’” John was upset that someone who was casting out demons was not personally following along with them. Possibly, John and the other disciples were frustrated with this person who was casting out demons. Maybe their pride got in the way again because it revealed to them that other followers of Jesus could cast out demons when they sometimes could not, as we saw recorded in Luke 9:40. Jesus reminded them, though, that if they were not against them, then they were for them. God had Paul record something similar in Philippians 1:15–18, noting that many were preaching Christ from different motives, some even with evil motives, but he chose to rejoice because, either way, Christ was being preached. Then, in Luke 9:51–56, Jesus had sent a couple of His messengers to get a place for them in Samaria, but His messengers came back saying they were unwilling. James and John were ready to call down fire and brimstone on the city. Jesus lovingly rebuked them, saying that He “did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” Christ came to save all, and we must walk with His mind and heart as well.

Challenge & Application

How has your pride gotten in the way of rejoicing in Christ when God used someone else to do what you thought you should be doing? How are you loving others and especially those who are against Christ right now?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

We read in Luke 9:28–36 about Jesus being transfigured in front of Peter, James, and John. After eight days had passed, Jesus invited Peter, James, and John to join Him on a mountain to pray. As they were praying, Jesus’ appearance changed. God had Matthew record how Jesus’ face shone like the sun in Matthew 17:2. God had Matthew and Mark bot...

Day 2

As we read Luke 9:33, we clearly see that Moses and Elijah were leaving. Peter got so caught up in the moment that he spoke without thinking about what he said. Peter said to our Lord, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Without knowing it, Peter had put Mo...

Day 3

God had Luke record the following in Luke 9:37–42, “On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. 38 And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only boy, 39 and a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at t...

Day 4

God then had Luke record this in Luke 9:43–45, “And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. But while everyone was marveling at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples, 44 ‘Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.’ 45 But they did not understand this statement, and i...

Day 5

In yesterday’s devotion, we learned how the disciples did not understand what Jesus said about being turned over to the hands of men. Today, we get a little further glimpse of why their minds were blinded. God had Luke record this in Luke 9:46–48, “An argument started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. 47 But Jesus, knowing...

Day 7

God had Luke then record what Jesus had laid out about following Him. Jesus never painted an unrealistic picture of what it meant to follow Him. We read in Luke 9:57–62, “As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, ‘I will follow You wherever You go.’ 58 And Jesus said to him, ‘The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have ne...
