Day 2

Scripture to Read: Luke 9:33–36

As we read Luke 9:33, we clearly see that Moses and Elijah were leaving. Peter got so caught up in the moment that he spoke without thinking about what he said. Peter said to our Lord, “Master, it is good for us to be here; let us make three tabernacles: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.” Without knowing it, Peter had put Moses and Elijah on the same level as our Lord Jesus Christ. No doubt that God had used Moses and Elijah while they were on earth to accomplish incredible things for His glory, but they were merely men who had chosen to surrender to follow the God of all creation. Right after Peter said what he did, God the Father “overshadowed them” in His glory, which in the Old Testament is called the Shekinah glory of God (Exodus 16:10, Exodus 24:16–17, Leviticus 9:23–24, 1 Kings 8:10–11, Isaiah 6:1–3, Ezekiel 10:4). Though the word “Shekinah” is never used in the English translation of the Bible, the word “Shekinah” comes from the Hebrew root word “shakan” which means “to dwell” or “to settle.” Therefore, “Shekinah” refers to the dwelling or settling of God’s presence among His people. God the Father showed up to speak to Peter, James, and John, and He told them in Luke 9:35, “This is My Son, My Chosen One; listen to Him!” God the Father left no doubt, Jesus is His only begotten Son, and we must listen to Him and obey Him as our Lord.

Challenge & Application

Why is it important to remember that all of the people in the Bible are just like you and me? How are you doing in listening to our Lord and obeying Him?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

We read in Luke 9:28–36 about Jesus being transfigured in front of Peter, James, and John. After eight days had passed, Jesus invited Peter, James, and John to join Him on a mountain to pray. As they were praying, Jesus’ appearance changed. God had Matthew record how Jesus’ face shone like the sun in Matthew 17:2. God had Matthew and Mark bot...

Day 3

God had Luke record the following in Luke 9:37–42, “On the next day, when they came down from the mountain, a large crowd met Him. 38 And a man from the crowd shouted, saying, “Teacher, I beg You to look at my son, for he is my only boy, 39 and a spirit seizes him, and he suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with foaming at t...

God then had Luke record this in Luke 9:43–45, “And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. But while everyone was marveling at all that He was doing, He said to His disciples, 44 ‘Let these words sink into your ears; for the Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men.’ 45 But they did not understand this statement, and i...

Day 5

In yesterday’s devotion, we learned how the disciples did not understand what Jesus said about being turned over to the hands of men. Today, we get a little further glimpse of why their minds were blinded. God had Luke record this in Luke 9:46–48, “An argument started among them as to which of them might be the greatest. 47 But Jesus, knowing...

Day 6

God had Luke record a couple of different events in Luke 9:49–56. First, we read in Luke 9:49–50, “John answered and said, ‘Master, we saw someone casting out demons in Your name; and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow along with us.’ 50 But Jesus said to him, ‘Do not hinder him; for he who is not against you is for you.’” Joh...

Day 7

God had Luke then record what Jesus had laid out about following Him. Jesus never painted an unrealistic picture of what it meant to follow Him. We read in Luke 9:57–62, “As they were going along the road, someone said to Him, ‘I will follow You wherever You go.’ 58 And Jesus said to him, ‘The foxes have holes and the birds of the air have ne...
