Day 1

Scripture to Read: Luke 18:18-21

Jesus was often questioned by religious leaders, political rulers, and others who were seen as having power and status. One such ruler questioned Jesus, as we read in Luke 18:18–21, “A ruler questioned Him, saying, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ 19 And Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good? No one is good except God alone. 20 You know the commandments, ‘Do not commit adultery, Do not murder, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor your father and mother.’” 21 And he said, ‘All these things I have kept from my youth.’” If someone were to ask us, “What do I have to do to inherit eternal life?” most Christians would jump at the chance to tell them how they must repent, confess their sin, and humbly come to Christ and surrender to Him as Lord and Savior. But Jesus asked the ruler a question first. Jesus asked the ruler why he called Him good and that no one is good except for God. This would have challenged the ruler to examine Jesus’ identity. For if the ruler truly thought Jesus to be “good,” then Jesus was not just a teacher, but God in the flesh. The ruler also thought he could earn eternal life by doing enough “good.” Notice that Jesus only lists five of the Ten Commandments, all dealing with how the ruler related to others but not about the ruler’s relationship with God. The ruler felt good about himself, but Jesus knew the ruler’s heart did not belong to God.

Challenge & Application

Why did Jesus ask the ruler a question about goodness? How has God used you to help lead someone to know and follow Christ as Lord of all?

Day 2

The ruler who came to Jesus was trying to figure out how to earn eternal life. He was already considered rich by the world’s standard, so he probably figured he could gain the riches of eternity by his effort too. But Jesus rocked the rich rulers’ “self-effort” mentality. We read in Luke 18:22–23, “When Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One ...

Day 3

Jesus knew that what He had said to the rich ruler would be incredibly difficult for him to hear and even more difficult for him to do, but that did not stop Jesus from sharing the truth with him. Then, God had Luke record what Jesus said next in Luke 18:24–27, “And Jesus looked at him and said, ‘How hard it is for those who are wealthy to en...

We read in Luke 18:31–33, “Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. 32 For He will be handed over to t...

Though Jesus sought to prepare His disciples for what was to come, they still did not understand it. We read in Luke 18:34, “But the disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.” Jesus had told the disciples that they were all going to...

Day 7

God had Luke record the story of a man named Bartimaeus. We read in Luke 18:35–43, “As Jesus was approaching Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging. 36 Now hearing a crowd going by, he began to inquire what this was. 37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he called out, saying, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have ...
