Day 2

Scripture to Read: Luke 18:22-23

The ruler who came to Jesus was trying to figure out how to earn eternal life. He was already considered rich by the world’s standard, so he probably figured he could gain the riches of eternity by his effort too. But Jesus rocked the rich rulers’ “self-effort” mentality. We read in Luke 18:22–23, “When Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One thing you still lack; sell all that you possess and distribute it to the poor, and you shall have treasure in heaven; and come, follow Me.” 23 But when he had heard these things, he became very sad, for he was extremely rich.” Jesus went straight for the ruler’s heart. Jesus knew the ruler was in love with his riches and that those riches were his god. The ruler had to be willing to die to his fleshly desires and choose to love God with all his heart. Notice the ruler’s response; he was sad, but not broken, not repentant, and seemingly unwilling to follow through on what Jesus said he must do. When we share Christ with others, they must understand that following Christ will cost them everything. Jesus paid for their sin debt on the cross and they can add nothing to that. But they must still be willing to die to their fleshly desires and surrender completely to our Lord Jesus Christ in all areas of their lives. Jesus laid out the cost of following Him in Matthew 10:24–39 and Luke 14:25–33. Just as the ruler had to choose his God, that same choice must be made by everyone.

Challenge & Application

What did the ruler lack, and what choice did he have to make? Why is it hard for people to surrender to Christ as Lord, and how are you choosing to walk with Him daily?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus was often questioned by religious leaders, political rulers, and others who were seen as having power and status. One such ruler questioned Jesus, as we read in Luke 18:18–21, “A ruler questioned Him, saying, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ 19 And Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good? No one is good excep...

Day 3

Jesus knew that what He had said to the rich ruler would be incredibly difficult for him to hear and even more difficult for him to do, but that did not stop Jesus from sharing the truth with him. Then, God had Luke record what Jesus said next in Luke 18:24–27, “And Jesus looked at him and said, ‘How hard it is for those who are wealthy to en...

We read in Luke 18:31–33, “Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. 32 For He will be handed over to t...

Though Jesus sought to prepare His disciples for what was to come, they still did not understand it. We read in Luke 18:34, “But the disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.” Jesus had told the disciples that they were all going to...

Day 7

God had Luke record the story of a man named Bartimaeus. We read in Luke 18:35–43, “As Jesus was approaching Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging. 36 Now hearing a crowd going by, he began to inquire what this was. 37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he called out, saying, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have ...
