Day 6

Scripture to Read: Luke 18:34

Though Jesus sought to prepare His disciples for what was to come, they still did not understand it. We read in Luke 18:34, “But the disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.” Jesus had told the disciples that they were all going to Jerusalem where everything that had been written by the prophets about the Son of Man would be fulfilled. Jesus specifically told them that He would be handed over to the Gentiles, mocked, insulted, spit upon, flogged, killed, and raised again on the third day, and the disciples did not understand any of it. What the disciples could not understand was that Jesus was the promised Messiah and that His mission would involve suffering. They could not understand that His death would not be an accidental defeat but the fulfillment of God the Father’s perfect plan. They also could not comprehend that Jesus’ resurrection would be real and that His resurrection would defeat death for all mankind. They also had a hard time understanding that all of the Old Testament prophecies pointed to a suffering and rejected Messiah as well as a glorious One. At that time, the disciples’ spiritual understanding had not yet been opened. We must understand that spiritual truth requires divine illumination. The disciples eventually understood because Jesus opened the Scriptures and their minds (Luke 24:44–47). The god of this world still blinds the minds of non-believers (2 Corinthians 4:3–4); that is why we preach Christ and His Word.

Challenge & Application

Why could the disciples not understand what Jesus shared with them? How are we given understanding of God and His Word, and what does this teach us about our full dependence on Him?

Day 1

Jesus was often questioned by religious leaders, political rulers, and others who were seen as having power and status. One such ruler questioned Jesus, as we read in Luke 18:18–21, “A ruler questioned Him, saying, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ 19 And Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good? No one is good excep...

Day 2

The ruler who came to Jesus was trying to figure out how to earn eternal life. He was already considered rich by the world’s standard, so he probably figured he could gain the riches of eternity by his effort too. But Jesus rocked the rich rulers’ “self-effort” mentality. We read in Luke 18:22–23, “When Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One ...

Day 3

Jesus knew that what He had said to the rich ruler would be incredibly difficult for him to hear and even more difficult for him to do, but that did not stop Jesus from sharing the truth with him. Then, God had Luke record what Jesus said next in Luke 18:24–27, “And Jesus looked at him and said, ‘How hard it is for those who are wealthy to en...

Day 4

Jesus had just spoken, and as soon as He was done, we read this in Luke 18:28–30, “Peter said, ‘Behold, we have left our own homes and followed You.’ 29 And He said to them, ‘Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times...

Day 5

Jesus often pulled His disciples aside to speak to them personally and that is what happened next. We read in Luke 18:31–33, “Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. 32 For He will be handed over to t...

Day 7

God had Luke record the story of a man named Bartimaeus. We read in Luke 18:35–43, “As Jesus was approaching Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging. 36 Now hearing a crowd going by, he began to inquire what this was. 37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he called out, saying, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have ...
