Day 5

Scripture to Read: Luke 18:31-33

Jesus often pulled His disciples aside to speak to them personally and that is what happened next. We read in Luke 18:31–33, “Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. 32 For He will be handed over to the Gentiles, and will be mocked and mistreated and spit upon, 33 and after they have scourged Him, they will kill Him; and the third day He will rise again.’” Jesus knew why He had come to earth and He continually sought to prepare His disciples for what would happen to Him. We find in these passages (Matthew 17:22–27, Matthew 20:18–34, Matthew 27:63, Mark 9:12, Mark 9:31, Luke 17:25, Luke 24:7, John 2:19) Jesus sharing about His arrest, beating, crucifixion, death, burial, and resurrection. Here in Luke 18, Jesus told the disciples that what had been written through the prophets about the Son of Man would be fulfilled when they reached Jerusalem. Jesus even gave the disciples a more detailed explanation of what would happen to Him. Jesus wanted His disciples as prepared as possible for what was coming. God has given us His Word so we can know how to live for Him each day and to glimpse what is to come when we are called home by Him. God does not leave us to wonder, and though we may not have all the answers we’re looking for, we know we can trust Him.

Challenge & Application

How did Jesus try to prepare His disciples for what was going to happen? How has the Lord sought to prepare us for what we face every day and for what’s to come?

Day 1

Jesus was often questioned by religious leaders, political rulers, and others who were seen as having power and status. One such ruler questioned Jesus, as we read in Luke 18:18–21, “A ruler questioned Him, saying, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ 19 And Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good? No one is good excep...

Day 2

The ruler who came to Jesus was trying to figure out how to earn eternal life. He was already considered rich by the world’s standard, so he probably figured he could gain the riches of eternity by his effort too. But Jesus rocked the rich rulers’ “self-effort” mentality. We read in Luke 18:22–23, “When Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One ...

Day 3

Jesus knew that what He had said to the rich ruler would be incredibly difficult for him to hear and even more difficult for him to do, but that did not stop Jesus from sharing the truth with him. Then, God had Luke record what Jesus said next in Luke 18:24–27, “And Jesus looked at him and said, ‘How hard it is for those who are wealthy to en...

Day 6

Though Jesus sought to prepare His disciples for what was to come, they still did not understand it. We read in Luke 18:34, “But the disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.” Jesus had told the disciples that they were all going to...

Day 7

God had Luke record the story of a man named Bartimaeus. We read in Luke 18:35–43, “As Jesus was approaching Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging. 36 Now hearing a crowd going by, he began to inquire what this was. 37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he called out, saying, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have ...
