Day 4

Scripture to Read: Luke 18:28-30

Jesus had just spoken, and as soon as He was done, we read this in Luke 18:28–30, “Peter said, ‘Behold, we have left our own homes and followed You.’ 29 And He said to them, ‘Truly I say to you, there is no one who has left house or wife or brothers or parents or children, for the sake of the kingdom of God, 30 who will not receive many times as much at this time and in the age to come, eternal life.’” Since we do not know Peter’s heart when he said this, we can only speculate that Peter might have been expressing his and the other disciples’ devotion to Christ. The problem is that his words have an element of comparison: the rich ruler kept his possessions, whereas the disciples had abandoned their former lives to follow Jesus. Becoming a Christian, though, is not about giving away all possessions or what one gives up; Christianity is about Whom we choose to follow wholeheartedly. The disciples hadn’t left things behind to create a spiritual achievement of their own, but they left them knowing Jesus had called them to Himself and to the kingdom of God. Jesus never presented sacrifice as a way to earn salvation. The disciples didn’t earn eternal life by their sacrifices. Their willingness to leave everything simply demonstrated their faith in Jesus and their commitment to God’s kingdom. Jesus also made it clear that what someone may leave behind to know and follow Jesus is nothing compared to what they gain through their relationship with Christ and all of God’s family.

Challenge & Application

When our Lord called you to know and follow Him, what did you leave behind to wholeheartedly follow the Lord? How have you seen our Lord bless you in your walk with Him since following Him as Lord and Savior?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Jesus was often questioned by religious leaders, political rulers, and others who were seen as having power and status. One such ruler questioned Jesus, as we read in Luke 18:18–21, “A ruler questioned Him, saying, ‘Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’ 19 And Jesus said to him, ‘Why do you call Me good? No one is good excep...

Day 2

The ruler who came to Jesus was trying to figure out how to earn eternal life. He was already considered rich by the world’s standard, so he probably figured he could gain the riches of eternity by his effort too. But Jesus rocked the rich rulers’ “self-effort” mentality. We read in Luke 18:22–23, “When Jesus heard this, He said to him, “One ...

Day 3

Jesus knew that what He had said to the rich ruler would be incredibly difficult for him to hear and even more difficult for him to do, but that did not stop Jesus from sharing the truth with him. Then, God had Luke record what Jesus said next in Luke 18:24–27, “And Jesus looked at him and said, ‘How hard it is for those who are wealthy to en...

Day 5

Jesus often pulled His disciples aside to speak to them personally and that is what happened next. We read in Luke 18:31–33, “Then He took the twelve aside and said to them, “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all things which are written through the prophets about the Son of Man will be accomplished. 32 For He will be handed over to t...

Day 6

Though Jesus sought to prepare His disciples for what was to come, they still did not understand it. We read in Luke 18:34, “But the disciples understood none of these things, and the meaning of this statement was hidden from them, and they did not comprehend the things that were said.” Jesus had told the disciples that they were all going to...

Day 7

God had Luke record the story of a man named Bartimaeus. We read in Luke 18:35–43, “As Jesus was approaching Jericho, a blind man was sitting by the road begging. 36 Now hearing a crowd going by, he began to inquire what this was. 37 They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by. 38 And he called out, saying, ‘Jesus, Son of David, have ...
