Scripture to Read: Luke 4:1–2
The temptations that Jesus faced from the devil help us understand how we can have victory over the temptations we face each day. As God led Luke to write, we read in Luke 4:1–2, “Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He became hungry.” Jesus was fully man, but He was also fully God. As God led Luke to write, God led Luke to describe Jesus as “full of the Spirit.” Jesus was most assuredly a Spirit-filled man. Jesus, though, being 100% man still had to choose to willingly submit to the guidance of God the Father and rely completely on the power of God the Holy Spirit. The same Holy Spirit indwells us as followers of Christ; therefore, we have to make the same choice every day to willingly submit to the Father’s perfect plan for us (Ephesians 2:10, Ephesians 5:17–18, Philippians 2:13) and completely rely on God the Holy Spirit in us to fulfill that plan. Jesus was tempted just like us so He could identify with our weaknesses and provide us with all we need to overcome every temptation just as He did. That is why God reminds us in Hebrews 4:15, “For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things as we are, yet without sin.”
