Day 4

Scripture to Read: Luke 4:9–12

The devil continued to tempt Jesus, for we read in Luke 4:9–12, “9 And he led Him to Jerusalem and had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, ‘If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down from here; 10 for it is written, ‘He will command His angels concerning You to guard You,’ 11 and, ‘On their hands they will bear You up, so that You will not strike Your foot against a stone.’ 12 And Jesus answered and said to him, ‘It is said, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’” Satan knew he was in a battle, for our Lord Jesus had used the Word of God to overcome two of the temptations that he had laid out so far. So, this temptation was “the boastful pride of life,” and Satan decided to try to use God’s Word as he tempted Jesus. Satan quoted Psalm 91:11–12, knowing it was a Messianic prophecy. But Satan made sure not to quote Psalm 91:13, which says, “You will tread upon the lion and cobra, the young lion and the serpent you will trample down.” Satan knew the prophecies and that Jesus had come to trample him down. Satan just did not know that Jesus would do it through His death on the cross, His burial, and then His resurrection. Of course, Jesus quoted Deuteronomy 6:16, reminding Satan that you never test God. We must remember that Satan knows the entire Word of God, so when we battle we had better be prepared (Ephesians 6:10–18).

Challenge & Application

Since Satan knows the Word of God, what must we do to be prepared for the temptations we face? How do we prepare for the battlefield every day?

Day 1

The temptations that Jesus faced from the devil help us understand how we can have victory over the temptations we face each day. As God led Luke to write, we read in Luke 4:1–2, “Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led around by the Spirit in the wilderness 2 for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate...

Day 2

We know Jesus was in the wilderness for forty days, and during that time, He fasted and the devil tempted Him. But then, God had Luke provide us with some specifics on how Jesus was tempted. We know Jesus would have been incredibly hungry, for He had been fasting for forty days. God led Luke to write in Luke 4:3–4, “3 And the devil said to Hi...

Day 3

The devil never just tempts once, but he’ll offer whatever he can to see us sin and turn away from our fellowship with God through Christ. The devil did not give up on Jesus either, for God had Luke record in Luke 4:5–8, “And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, ‘I will g...

Day 5

Jesus faced the same spiritual battles that we face every day. Jesus had to fight the battles the same way we do; He used the Word of God as the weapon to defeat the devil and his temptations. That is why God tells us in Ephesians 6:12, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the w...

Day 6

Our Lord gave us His perfect example of how to be prepared for the temptations we face each day. Some might think that Jesus would not have to face any more temptations, but God had Luke write in Luke 4:13, “When the devil had finished every temptation, he left Him until an opportune time.” The devil had finished for the moment, but he defini...

Day 7

God had Luke share this with us in Luke 4:14–15, “And Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about Him spread through all the surrounding district. 15 And He began teaching in their synagogues and was praised by all.” Remember that Jesus had fasted for forty days and nights, was continually tempted by the devil, and wa...
