Scripture to Read: Luke 4:5–8
The devil never just tempts once, but he’ll offer whatever he can to see us sin and turn away from our fellowship with God through Christ. The devil did not give up on Jesus either, for God had Luke record in Luke 4:5–8, “And he led Him up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, ‘I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me, and I give it to whomever I wish. 7 Therefore if You worship before me, it shall all be Yours.’ 8 Jesus answered him, ‘It is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God and serve Him only.’” Satan tempted Jesus again with “the lust of the eyes” and “the boastful pride of life.” Satan is the ruler of this world (John 12:31) and the prince of the power of the air (Ephesians 2:2). So, Satan does have some authority and power in this world. He rules over those who have not surrendered to Christ as Lord, he blinds them to the good news of Christ (2 Corinthians 4:3–4), and holds them in a snare (2 Timothy 2:26). “The whole world lies in the power of the evil one” (1 John 5:19). Satan tempted Jesus to win back the world without going to the cross. Jesus knew He must suffer before entering His Father’s glory (Luke 24:25–26). Jesus overcame again by quoting God’s Word in Deuteronomy 6:13 and Deuteronomy 10:20.
