Day 2

Scripture to Read: Colossians 3:5–7

Christ lives in every Christian through His Holy Spirit. Because Christ indwells us, God tells us in Colossians 3:5–7, “Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. 6 For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the sons of disobedience, 7 and in them you also once walked, when you were living in them.” We must crucify, kill, obliterate, annihilate, and destroy the deeds of our flesh. All of these verbs accurately describe what we must actively choose to do to our fleshly desires every single day. Before we surrendered to Christ as Lord, we were held captive by these desires because we were dead in our sins (Ephesians 2:1–3). But because of Christ’s Holy Spirit in us, we have His power to choose to no longer submit to these fleshly actions and desires. These fleshly desires rule those who are still without Christ because their spirit is still dead and their soul (their mind, will, and emotions) does not have the power to overcome these fleshly desires. When we fall into the mindset that we are in charge, then our fleshly nature is going to show itself and tempt us to submit to those old, deadly desires. Surrendering to the Lordship of Christ is not just a one-time decision. Although that decision began our relationship with Christ, we must still choose to walk fully surrendered to Him daily since He is our Lord, King, Master, and the One completely in charge.

Challenge & Application

Why must we daily, and sometimes many times during the day, crucify our fleshly desires? How are we able to crucify our fleshly desires, and why must we walk guarded against them?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Through Christ, all Christians have been given so much; therefore, we must make the daily decision to passionately pursue Him and His Word. God tells us in Colossians 3:1–4, “Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things above, n...

Day 3

The deeds of our flesh are extremely ugly, selfish, prideful, and hurtful to ourselves and to anyone they impact. God wants us to act like Him and not fall prey to our old way of life before Christ was our Lord. God tells us today in Colossians 3:8–9, “But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech fro...

Day 4

God clearly commands us to lay aside the deeds of our flesh, but the beauty of our Heavenly Father is that He never commands us to put something aside without also telling us what we must put on and live like. God had Paul write this in Colossians 3:10–11, “and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the...

Day 5

God told us we must put on the new self, but then God led Paul to give specifics on what that new self should look like. God had Paul write in Colossians 3:12–14, “So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving ea...

Day 6

God knows we live in a troubled and sin-filled world, and because we do, there are times we can feel overwhelmed by all of the evil. The world is the way it is because of sin, so, God had Paul write this in Colossians 3:15–16, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let th...

Day 7

The section of Scripture God has had us focus on in these devotions over the past 6 days has taught us what our lives must look like if we have truly surrendered to Christ as Lord. We will not do this perfectly, but we ought to be maturing so that Christ’s characteristics are ever growing in and through every area of our lives. That is why Go...
