Day 3

Scripture to Read: Colossians 3:8–9

The deeds of our flesh are extremely ugly, selfish, prideful, and hurtful to ourselves and to anyone they impact. God wants us to act like Him and not fall prey to our old way of life before Christ was our Lord. God tells us today in Colossians 3:8–9, “But now you also, put them all aside: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices.” When God says that we must “put them aside,” it’s the picture of taking something off. A good way to picture this is to imagine that you have just worked outside in the hot sun. You are sweaty, you stink, and you know you need a shower. You come in the house, remove the sweaty, stinky clothes, and you get in the shower to clean up. Once you have showered, you smell, feel, and look clean. You would never consider taking up those stinky, sweaty clothes and putting them back on your clean body. When we surrendered to Christ, we were made clean, brand new, holy, righteous, and pure. Though we are new in Christ, our fleshly nature did not die. This is why we struggle each day, because our fleshly nature seeks to be in charge. This is why God tells us in Romans 8:6, “For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.” We must “put aside” our fleshly nature and set our minds on the Spirit.

Challenge & Application

Why must we put aside all of the deeds of our fleshly nature? What do we enjoy as we put our minds on the Spirit and walk in obedience to our Lord?

Don’t forget to pray using the A.C.T.S. (Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication) method!

Day 1

Through Christ, all Christians have been given so much; therefore, we must make the daily decision to passionately pursue Him and His Word. God tells us in Colossians 3:1–4, “Therefore if you have been raised up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. 2 Set your mind on the things above, n...

Day 2

Christ lives in every Christian through His Holy Spirit. Because Christ indwells us, God tells us in Colossians 3:5–7, “Therefore consider the members of your earthly body as dead to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry. 6 For it is because of these things that the wrath of God will come upon the so...

Day 4

God clearly commands us to lay aside the deeds of our flesh, but the beauty of our Heavenly Father is that He never commands us to put something aside without also telling us what we must put on and live like. God had Paul write this in Colossians 3:10–11, “and have put on the new self who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the...

Day 5

God told us we must put on the new self, but then God led Paul to give specifics on what that new self should look like. God had Paul write in Colossians 3:12–14, “So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience; 13 bearing with one another, and forgiving ea...

Day 6

God knows we live in a troubled and sin-filled world, and because we do, there are times we can feel overwhelmed by all of the evil. The world is the way it is because of sin, so, God had Paul write this in Colossians 3:15–16, “Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body; and be thankful. 16 Let th...

Day 7

The section of Scripture God has had us focus on in these devotions over the past 6 days has taught us what our lives must look like if we have truly surrendered to Christ as Lord. We will not do this perfectly, but we ought to be maturing so that Christ’s characteristics are ever growing in and through every area of our lives. That is why Go...
